I can't figure out how to get the bobbin to wind. I don't have a manual but found one online I could view. I'm sure it is something simple that I'm doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

I did join the Singer Group on Yahoo so maybe I'll get an answer over there.

Thanks!

I have a Singer Fashion Mate 237. It was given to me by my husband's boss. It belonged to his mother who passed away last year. It looks like it is brand new and sews like a dream. Anyway, to wind a bobbin, once you have the empty bobbin on the spindle on the top right hand side of the machine, loosen the knob in the middle of the wheel on the right side with the band on it. Be sure to push the bobbin and spindle to the right to engage it.

Thanks for your reply. I tried that and it still won't wind. The spool pin moves but the bobbin just sits there. It may have the wrong bobbin. I was trying the one in the case, I'll try some of my Brother bobbins and see if they work. I read on another forum that it takes class 15's. I'll pick some up at wally world today. If I can't get it to work it is no big deal. i have 6 days to return it for a full refund of my 6.00

Sounds like you don't have the bobbin fully seated on the winder. There should be a small slit near the center of the bobbin that fits over a pin sticking out near the center of the bobbin winder. That's what makes the bobbin turn. The instructions at

http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_237_threading_diagram.htm

might help.

Thanks Ed. I forgot to tell her about seating the bobbin on the pin. My Pfaff bobbins have to be seated the same way or they won't wind.

There is no pin on the bobbin winder. There is a very tiny stud at the bottom of the shaft that a class 15 will catch on to wind. I wound a bobbin on it and tried to sew with it. Not such great results. I then wound a new bobbin on my other machine and used it. The results were better but I was never able to get a balanced tension. I'd get one problem solved and another tension problem would show up. I got it making a really pretty straight stitch but when I tried to use the zig zag stitches it went all cattywampus, then wouldn't return to the nice straight stitch.

The tension mechanism is shot. I'm not going to put anymore time or money into it. I'll return it and wait for another machine to come along. They are few and far between, as I live in the south where quilting is king. Any older all metal machines don't come available that often.
