I found the best method for me. It took some practice but I actually got some good looking squares!

I bought the quilting bible and followed one of the methods in the book for grid and chain sewing block pieces. For the life of me I couldn't get the darn triangles to line up exact after cutting them (resulting ina horrible excuse for a pinwheel block when assembled) - I know it takes practice with rotary cutter, and some practice sewing them together. But, I gotta tell you, it's so much easier to sew the blocks on a grid, then cut.

Does anyone else use this method? Am I wasting any time or fabric with this method?

I feel like I'm getting somewhere now!

Butterfly:

Are you talking about using the method where you take two squares of fabric, right sides together, draw a diagonal line across the blocks and sew a qtr of and inch on each side of the line and the cut in two on the drawn line?
This resulting in 2 HST blocks, if so then yes, that is the way I make my HST blocks.

yep that is how I do mine too - a bit of a dogs breakfast if I cut the triangles and stitch that dreaded bias :nervous:
Sounds like you are hooked

I always cut my two squares a little bigger, then after I sew the two seams and cut, I press and trim to my desired size. I've NEVER been able to have them come out perfectly right if I don't make them bigger first.

Me too! This is definitely the way I do it. :dave:
I read too, if you add 7/8" to your square, then it will turn out the correct size.
BUT I hate fooling around with 1/8" of an inch, so I just cut them to the nearest inch, then trim my surrounding squares to match their finished size.

if you're making hst's and cutting apart and trimming, you must be certain to place the 45 degree line on your ruler on the seam where your two fabrics meet. then trim. othewise you're right, your pin wheels won't meet up correctly. i hope this helps. just watch that line and trim them all the same way and size. good luck.

Nativetexan - that was perfecto! I was going along my merry way w/ HST's - but wasn't triming them after - what a difference!

Thanks!

It's the only way for me. I hate cutting out and never seem to get a rotary cut straight. Happy quilting. Gena

I tried this method and it works really well. I worked on a pattern called "Glory Be" today and the little blocks are only 1 7/8 inches. Talk about HARD to sew together. The problem I am having is that when I get the blocks made and then sew them together (like in rows of 3) the middle one seems to pucker. This particular pattern had 6 star shapes and the ended up semi-put together but not perfect. I think it's gonna just take practice.
Doing this method with the half square triangles though works quite well and saves ALOT of time!!
