I want to make a label with a small picture and poem to put on the back of my brothers quilt. It's a love quilt for him to wrap up in. He's dying. I want it to be soft as the flannel backing, so it doesn't bother his skin. With that said, can I fuse some type of interfacing to a soft fabric and run it through my printer? Thanks for any help. Gena, You can iron on freezer paper to the flannel, run it through your printer then peel off the freezer paper and sew. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper to the wrong side of the paper. Trim so that no stray bits of fabric are around the edges. Insert in printer and set you printer for farbic and print away. Summer

Gena..... I haven't had success with that method....and it can wreck havoc on your printer. I use the June Tailor Sew-In Computer Printer Fabric for labels. A package contains four 8 1/2 x 11 fabric sheets ready for your color inkjet printer or color inkjet copy machines. I have only used the printer and it works great. These labels are only for quilts that are never laundered :( as the package says only to dryclean. When I have photo reproduced signatures for wall-hangings (and I know the recipient will be washing the quilt) I usually take my signatures to a document business and tell them I want to transfer the image to fabric and they will reverse the label and put it onto a transfer sheet that is then heat set to fabric. Since I don't want to do this with my iron at home (I don't want it to be uneven from the holes for steam) I take my fabric and the transfer to a t-shirt printing business that heat sets it for me. Is it possible that you can just ink the label yourself with pigma pens? I am sure your brother would love having the poem in your writing. If this quilt will need frequent washings, the ink from the pigma pens will hold up quite well. Hope this helps you. Patty

Thank you Summer and Patty for your ideas. I have wanted to do the writing by hand but didn't know if the pens really hold up. I'm sure it will need to be washed fairly often. I'll stop into JoAnn's fabric store today after I take my ds#1 to work and check them out. I think I'll also try your other suggestions for another quilt for my dgs. Thanks again. Happy quilting. Gena, who enjoying the cool mornings here in Texas. Wish the days were a bit cooler. |

Gena....don't forget to get it with a discount coupon. If you have Michael's or J.C. Moore in your area, they might accept their coupons (call and ask them) I'm glad you're going to try the pigma pens....they come in all colors and sizes. Get a wide mm for the writing. Also iron freezer paper to the back of label to stablize it while you are writing. I've never done a label on flannel, so I'd love to hear how it works out for you. Patty

My friend tried to do a label on flannel this week with the pigma pen and it didn't work. The nap soaked up the ink and blurred.

We have a quilting group at church that meets once a week. We make lap quilts for anyone who is ill, and for children, and we put simple short prayers on 2 oe 3 squares in the quilts, using a black narrow sharpie pen. They are indelible and do not smear or run. Flannel is not used for these squares because it has a nap and all napped fabrics run. We use soft flexible fabrics that have a smooth surface. We usually tie the quilts, but I am quilting one now in very simple designs for a man who is not only ill but blind as well, and what is wanted is something he can feel with his fingers, so I am using things like a salboat, a bird, a cat and a dog, and a truck for some of the squares (8"x8") and then doing all-over freemotion quilting on the rest of the squares. Thanks girls for the great tips. I hope to have the quilt finished next week. I sent it to LA to be machine quilted because I couldn't find anyone in my area that could do it. My mom has picked it up already and will bind it for me. I am sending the cotton label to her to stich on. I've never used pens so this has been a new experience for me. Have a great day. Gena. |

Patty, I to hope he feels the love. He needs it. 11 yrs. ago on June 30th our dad was killed. This past june 30th my brother was hit by a car and woke up in icu 24 hours later unaware of what had happened to him. He has a broken back with no feeling below his chest 4 broke ribs, both collorbones are broken and his head was cracked. No one knew to call us until he woke up. Thankfully he knew who he was and all but he doesn't know still what happened. He didn't take our dad's death well and hasn't since so I always know he's going to act out somehow during this time of the year, usually he's just very mouthy like an imature teenager. I had my sister call him to check on him and say hi.......she said he sounded fine and was with his girlfriend. I still felt uneasy about him. I guess like a mom's intuition. I don't know where he was but he said he ran out of gas and was off the road. It doesn't make sense to me because he is the kind of guy that will not run out of gas. But that's all he could tell anyone, he was on the side of the road, doesn't know who hit him or where is bike is or if it is damaged. So far we don't know either. I know we aren't given more than we can bear by our great Creator but I'm afraid he won't make it thru this trial My hope and prayer is of course for him to get well and recover but if it isn't in the plan then I ask mercy and peace for him. Also that he feels the love of his family. My mom is binding the quilt now for me and will put the label with the prayer on it also and then we'll get it to him. I had to mail it to LA to be quilted because there were no quilters here that could do itbefore 2months. The LA store got it in 2 days and had it quilted in 1 day. I'll use her again. Her fees are reasonable and it looks good. Sorry to drop all this on you all. Thanks for caring and listening. Have a great day. Gena |

everything will be okay in the end. if it's not okay, it's not the end. (unknown) Gena, Sharing your fears and tears is what life is about. I wish your brother comfort and healing as well as all your family. You have had your share of terrible tragedy and I wish brighter days in your future. ((((((((hug)))))))))))) Patty
