I have an old model Kenmore # 158.15160 I picked up at a yard sale. The pressure foot lever does not stay up. I have to manually hold it up when I place the material under it. Other than that it is in great shape. I did not get a manual and wondered if anyone here could tell me where I could get instructions on how to fix it. It goes up and down, it just stays down.
I tried looking online for some help..but could not find any.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!

Sears or Ebay. If you find one for sale on ebay they might make a copy of thier manual for you. Most of the people I have delt with on ebay are soo friendly and nice.

but I will take some time later to look and see. This machine is so old I prolly won't find one for sale. Thanks for answering!
I was hoping someone else has had this problem to give me some ideas. But I will look.

I think this is a site that has your manual. It is listed as 1516 (the manuals generally do not list the 158 prefix or the ending 0). I do not think it has any instructions on how to fix the presser foot lever but I think that a sewing repair shop could do that for you.

If you go to Sears.Com, then go to parts, you can input your model number and find allot of info on most of their machines. That includes the oldies. I ordered parts for my 35 year old Kenmore with no problem. I know some one that also called Sears to retrieve a manual on an old Kenmore.

On another side if you go to Yahoo Groups, search for Vintage Kenmore, there is a group that does nothing but collects them. With that group is several people that actually fix them! They also collect the manuals, accessory info, etc. You will have to wait a couple of days for approval to the group, a woman named Mel runs it, but they are a really helpful bunch! Great files with info too!

I just went and looked at my Kenmore(it's a 158 19141 model) and it appears that there is a spring involved as well as the lever that you lift the pressure foot up and down with has a bump on it (somewhat like a camshaft) that a small bar rides over and puts the spring into action. Maybe your bump on the lever is worn out and won't keep it up. Hope this makes a little sense to you. What color is you machine? Mine is kind of a tan color and I'm guessing that the manuals would be very similiar. Does it have any attatchments with it? How about cams ect?

Here is the link to Sears Parts (http://www3.sears.com/) . When I enter model # 158.19141 it pulls up a Kenmore sewing machine, when I click on that I get all sorts of parts! On the model you gave though I don't get anything so I would check your model number? I can tell you that under this parts section is where I found my diagrams on my machine for inside the machine, manual info, etc. Once I found all the diagrams I saved them onto my computer for future info. On the 158.19141 for example I seen the pressure bar assembly, from there I can view the parts lists I can order or I view the diagrams. I really was impressed with all the info I got from Sears on my 35 year old Kenmore here. As far as ordering the parts, I ordered all mine direct here, it took about 2 weeks to get them, didn't have any problems.

all of the great leads you have given me. This machine has drop in cams. I have not had a chance to look inside but will have my husband take the back part off. It may very well be the spring. Sometime this week I shall investigate and get back here to let everyone know how it goes.
Much appreciation to everyone here!!
