You run the risk of NO ONE repairing your machine or repairing at a VERY high price, if you buy from anyone other than a dealer. Most dealers these days will NOT take care of things bought off the internet. You would have to send it back to the manufacturer, on your own dime... You also will not get support, ie, classes etc. You also run the risk of not getting what you pay for and maybe getting a stolen machine, when you deal with e-bay... Chrys

The mfg will not honor the warranty on a machine that was purchased online. EVen if you purchase online from a dealer, the online dealer has to fix the machine at his own expense and there is the problem of shipping it back and forth to him for repair and being without for long periods. Brother will recognize the warranty from a machine purchased at Wal Mart. It is up to the local dealers if they will repair a machine purchased there...(they still get paid by Brother but some just won't). If you consider a purchase at Wal Mart, check your local Brother dealer to see if they will honor the warranty work. There is definate advantages with purchasing from a dealer. The dealer should give the machine a test drive and adjustment (insist on this) before it even leaves the shop. Most dealers will give starting classes and often they will give a little bit of a discount on their shop's goods when you purchase the machine. Your dealer may also give you a free cleaning if it is brought in before the warranty period is out of date. You may also get an incentive to trade up. Often dealers will give a full value trade in on the machine if you trade up within a certain period of time. This is a nice feature that allows you to try the machine and decide if you can afford to go higher or to see if it meets your needs. pam

I recently bought the SC 270D on ebay. It was in a factory sealed box and I have had no problems with it. I called a brother retailer and they said that you can usually only find that one online. I went to four different Wal-Mart stores (in So Cal) and couldn't find it. That's why I just ended up buying it on ebay. You can also find embroidery cards, thread exc. on there for good prices. I bought the Brother thread (polystar brand) from Mr Vac and Mrs Sew on ebay. It has all the colors and has the corresponding brother numers. If you get that machine you will not be sorry. I have been very happy with it as both an embroidery machine and sewing machine. |

I had another one of this model brought into the store for repair two days ago. It is another case of someone having this machine less that a year and it is now useless to them... too late to return it and nobody will service it.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

I bought mine at Ovestock.com. and am happy with it although I haven't used it much yet. I hope I won't have problems getting it repaired if needed. I have no local dealer nearer than 200 miles which isn't very local. I get sort of upset at people telling me I need to visit my local dealer. And who might that be. Not all of us live in or near large cities or even small cities. So I buy trustingly over the internet. |

In your case you really have no choice and I'm sure no dealer would fault you for purchaseing over the internet, you're probably going to need to ship the machine off for service anyway since there isn't anyone local. So you might as well purchase over the "net". Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Thank you, Tom for understanding. We live way high in the Arizona mountains. Yes, Arizona does have mountains and isolated towns. Internet shopping has been a welcome innovation for us up here. The post office, Fed-x and UPS are our life lines and we put up with the inconveniences of being so far from everything. We do go to Phoenix a couple of times a season and try to get all of the errands done in one day. Then beat it up the hill as fast as we can, back to our pine trees, elk, cooler weather and time to play with all of our crafty stuff. |

I bought my SE270D from overstock.com, too. For the same reasons as you did SpinnerSilver. I needed a new sewing machine, and really wanted to try machine embroidery, and didn't have an option of buying an affordable machine locally. It was either buying it over the internet, or not buying one at all. I'm hoping I can afford machine with a bigger field from a local dealer by the time I need mine serviced. But, I can't touch one around here for what I can afford right now! |
