Anybody have any veggies coming in? We've had a drought but hubby still managed to water enough that I've been busy putting up green beans and corn. I had to take a break. Tomatoes, eggplant, zuchini, squash, and cucumbers are almost ready. DH was late planting them. Our peppers don't look so good. We have watermelons about the size of softballs right now. And it's RAINING today!! Not alot, but it has rained and the sky is still dark. |

Hubby has planted two marrow plants in my flower beds. I've got a baby marrow about 1/2 an inch long. I don't really grow veggies, I'm a flower garden person - and my garden is so small it would take up too much space - although I may substitute sweet peas for runner beans next year - but I love the sweet pea flowers and scent....mmmm...... |

My house has one of those planters on the front in front of my living room.. Last year DS ripped the old worn out shrubs out of it, and then added compost from the compost heap he has been building and he treated this planter for a few months.. This year we have it full of herbs, Basil , Oregano, Dillweed, Chives, 3 kinds of Parsley, Sage, and 1 more , I can't think of right now.. We did not put mint in because they say Mint chokes everything else out.. We have the most beautiful Herb Garden.. So much fun to harvest and use..

I ate some Swiss Chard from my garden last week. I have a small garden 12'x7'. Rosemary, basil, parsley, chives and oregano are flourishing. My beans (yellow beans, green beans, and scarlet runners) are just in the flowering stage. The beets didn't grow well so I have had to replant those. My carrots never grew at all! Both beets and carrots were newly purchased seed packages...a waste of money. My aunt gave me 5 tomato plants...3 peach, 1 cherry & 1 red...and they are all doing well... lots of flowers and many little green tomatoes. It will be closer to the end of July before it really starts producing.

Have only had lettuces and other greens to eat so far. Beans, potatoes and tomatoes are flowering and I saw two small green tomatoes this evening. Spinach is getting ready to bolt. Wild strawberries that I moved to a border area still have some berries on them, amazingly late for that. They are for the dog. I was in a real rush when planting my garden this year and did not water in my seeds as much as I usually do. To my surprise I got a much better catch on just about everything. I think I've been watering too heavily when I plant the seeds. Must remember this for next year. DH put underground irrigation in some years ago and meant to put it on this morning but hoping it would rain so I don't have to use our precious well water. |

We have had far too much rain, some things have stalled. The strawberries are all done now. We picked about 50 boxes, ate some and froze the rest. YUMMY!!! Our lettuce is coming along, tomato plants have small fruit and our cherry tree dropped all the cherries before they ripened. Our potato plants look great, the beets are coming along with the peas, carrots, etc. MaryW

We did not put mint in because they say Mint chokes everything else out.. It does - but if you plant it in a bucket or container and then plant the container in the garden it doesn't spread - my Grandad taught me this. It's lovely to grow as it's so nice with new potatoes. Same applies to anything else that spreads and chokes - especially decorative grasses. |

Second the potted mint idea. My mint hasn't choked anything groen in the soil however - largely because it is outcompeted by the stinging nettles. The sunflowers in the front garden make it look very provencal - especially as they are all only the height of Toulouse Lautrec. Moss is just a distant memory Dom.... love and kisses, Jan

Not as tasty as the wild ones poochie-girl and I pick on our walks but a lot easier to pick. Raspberry pie is the favourite of me, my Mum and my niece. Yummmmm. Anybody else a pie person? |

Long blades..... I am definitely a pie person as well as my family. My one daughter that can only visit one or twice a year always asks that we pick her up at the airport with an french crust apple pie with a fork in it. At first it was a joke because she missed Thanksgiving one year while studying in Australia but became a constant after that. Just to tease her the other day I emailed her pictures of hot apple pies sitting on the counter in the kitchen. Did you ever see the movie _Michael_ and they are at the diner and the girl writes a song about pies. You name it, I make it.......but my family loves fresh blueberry peach in the summer. Hmmmmmm I even had a dream the other night and a guy riding a bike pulled up to my husband, who was driving our car, and the biker asked my husband if I would make him a pie..... Hmmmmmm......and when I say a biker, I don't mean Harley, I'm talking one wheel less than a tricycle. Patty

No, haven't heard of or seen that movie, will have to watch out for it. When I make pies from berries I pick I always get stars in my eyes from being out in the hot sun, searching in the bushes for the ripe berries. Only of course the stars are berries. I see them all that night as I try to get to sleep. LOL. Blueberries are almost ready so I guess I'll be going at it again. DH says he'll help pick this time. That's because he wants me to make cherry for him. Then will come apple and I will get such a cramped up hand from peeling all those apples. I love Wolf River apples for pie and most of them are so big they don't fit in the apple peeler thing. I wish I could see your photos and post my own but only have slow dial-up and it takes forever for pictures. |

(Sorry to rub it in for those of you wishing for it, LOL) My tomato plants are huge but only have very small tomatoes right now. My aunt gave me the plants. She said that 3 are a low acid type, one is regular and one is a cherry tomato plant. Well I think she missed on the cherry tomatoes...all plants have the same size tomatoes. Here's hoping that I will be able to make some chilli sauce later on!

I love gardening! My favorite is to grow tones of basil and make pesto sauce to last me all winter. I've got four types of lettuce that we've been making salads from (not sure why I bought so many kinds - I think my kids were distracting me in the store), couple tomato plants, peas, beans, basil, cilantro, cucumber, corn (trying for the first year), strawberries, raspberries and blueberries (the kids eat them before I can do anything with them), sage, and rosemary. I've also got a little apple tree that has four types of apples (espaliered? spelling?) but only one branch seems to have anything growing on it this year. Baby is sleeping so I should really get out there and water them before the lettuce wilts again. Jen |

Jen, I have to ask...what type of cooking do you do that uses pesto sauce. I have never used it but keep hearing about it at different times. I love pasta and even have a pasta cookbook but I don't see anything in it. I have a bunch of basil in my garden but only have a few recipes that I use it in. So would love to know what more I could do with it.

I'm late with this as I've been off the site for awhile. We have a compost pile & always get something coming up when we use it on the palms & other plants in the yard. Mostly have canalopes. This year I had 2 tomatoe plants come up under one of the royal palms. They did super as I got 20 real large tomatoes off those 2 plants. I put chicken wire cages around them so the birds & etc wouldn't get to them. I also planted in pots several kinds of herbs. They all did great & I dried them in the microwave. That was a first for me & I really enjoyed it. I don't plant a garden here as you have to add too much to all the sand but when we were in Mo years ago I always had a huge garden. This year was fun for me.Maybe I'll do a raised bed later & see what happens. |

Pesto sauce...mmmmm.....yummy......one of my favourites. Simple recipe: Plain cooked pasta - tagliatelle is good - drain, then stir in some pesto, serve and sprinkle on a little grated paremesan/black pepper (from a grinder, not the awful powdered stuff). Ring the changes by adding prawns or chopped ham - or grated courgette. Or all three! Pesto is a good stand-by if a vegetarian arrives for dinner but no good for vegans due to the parmesan. Another simple one: thinly slice some ciabatta bread, lightly toast and spread on some pesto. Stick some juicy prawns on top and you have a simple canape. I love red pesto too but no-one else in the house does |

HeyJudee, I usually freeze some of the pesto sauce in icecube trays then put the cubes into ziplock freezer bags so I can take out just a couple at a time. I'll put them into a pasta tomato sauce just to add some flavour in a hurry and what I love is to use the pesto sauce on pizza instead of (or combined with) tomato paste. I make a lot of pizza dough, every one loves to eat it and they can have what they like on it. Jen |

I picked what was left in my garden after the deer We had just planted another section of beans hoping for a fall crop, but unfortunately those were mowed down. Our tomato plants were beautiful, but those started dropping their leaves due to the hot wet weather causing tomato fungus. I was able to get some tomatoes before pulling them. Good thing we had great basil; at least I got several batches of pesto made to freeze and give to the kids for their apartments. I still can't believe my neighbor thought it was so funny watching the deer eat our garden. I always share vegetables with family and neighbors and I guess she didn't value our garden as much as we do. Longblades, our dog loves tomatoes and if she gets loose will run to the garden, pick a tomato and eat it. Patty

Dorothy, I cooked some venison 28 years ago when I was pregnant and the smell made me so ill I won't get near it to this day. I didn't realize that venison needed to be marinated in order to make it very tender and kill some of the bark/whatever they were grazing on smell. On a really strange note..... Yesterday evening we were upstairs in our familyroom and were startled when we heard a strange thump on our deck outside. To our amazement, a hawk had attacked a bird and was throwing it around. It then put it in it's beak and then carried it off to the field next door. I was shocked. I had no idea hawks would come so close to a home! My husband was heartbroken (he loves feeding the birds and my kids call it a bird garden rather than an herb garden). Heck, my husband planted blueberry bushes just for the bluebirds. (My one daughter doesn't like any of the birds and calls them rats with feathers. Bwhahahahahaha) Patty

Patty 22, Before we put in the inground pool we had an above ground pool with a huge deck around it. I'd be sitting out there & have hawks fly in, perch on the railing right beside me. Huge black birds plus the smaller yard birds. They never bothered except to look at me but the first time it happened I was sort of scared. Had no idea what was going to happen. Alfred Hitchcock's " The Birds " came to mind. We never did figure out why they did that. It wasn't the water as we have a large lake at the back yard plus bird baths. Any ideas anyone ? |

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album2/DSC03917.html The picture is fuzzy, but that is because I took the picture from inside the house the the window caused a reflection from the flash. Look in the center of the picture and the hawk is right above the black eyed susans sitting on a bird feeder. He was about 10" in height. The hawk is back picking up a free lunch. When I thought we would feed the birds, I didn't think it was going to mean other birds feasting on little birds. If anyone has any ideas on how to scare the hawk away I would appreciate them. I might write Cornell for some suggestions. Dorothy......can I come next week to visit? I have to work on Tuesday and Thursday is busy, so any of the other days would be fine. Patty

My daughter palnted 7 strawberry plants this year. The strawberries are about the size of your little fingernail (and that is on the generous side) and we have had enough to cover the bottom of a ramekin all season..... Basil (SIL) of course, wants to eat my stinging nettles - that or make them into rope. Apparently you can weave a rather nice fibre from them, not unlike hemp. Not me however, "go weave your own" is my cry. I am told his stinging nettle soup is very nice... I'll stick to eating the nasturtiums - at least I can grow them. The variagated ornamental sage I grew in a pot made lovely stuffing the other week as did the small leaved thyme. Anybody got a good receipe for dandylions? love and kisses, Jan

How about these? Although I must admit I've never made any. When I was young, my grandfather paid us to pick dandelions and he tried making dandelion wine...but it blew up before he was able to taste it. He never tried it again. http://www.mountain-breeze.com/kitchen/dandelions/ http://www.learningherbs.com/dandelion_recipes.html TTFN from

Patty 22, I like your yard. As for keeping hawks away all I can remember is a rubber snake is suppose to do it. Never tried it myself as I can't stand snakes, even rubber ones. They keep me away for sure. |

You have too much time on your hands Judy! My Dad used to make dandelion wine as I recall - I had forgotten that. It was really good but you had to have bucketloads of dandylions and I don't feel like letting my garden go that far.
love and kisses, Jan

My father always picked dandelions when they first appeared in the spring (by the time blossoms appear they are too old) for wine. One of my brothers was responsible for milking the cow every morning and evening. One day the cow was bellowing up in the barn and my other brother and I went to check out what the problem was. Seems my one brother had gotten into my father's wine and was extremely ill in the stall next to the cow. Unfortunately he had also consumed a great quantity of peanuts along with the beverage. Bwhahahahahahaha...... things I learned as a child: 1. Don't drink my father's wine. 2. If you drink wine, don't use peanuts as an appetizer. Patty

Cornell Bird Lab wrote me and they think it is a Cooper Hawk that is eating my little birds in the backyard. Their suggestion was to cover the bird feeders for two weeks so they will move onto more fertile grounds. Patty

Has anyone found labels that will stay stuck in the freezer? I used that green painters masking tape and it is coming off. The beige stuff was better but not 100% either. |
