What do you use this *&#$@! junk for, really?

When I was a newbie sewer, I mistakenly thought that adhesive-backed velcro would be a good idea for precise placement before sewing, so I bought a bunch. Several fouled needles (machine and hand) later, I realized what miserable stuff it really is. And yet, the adhesive bond doesn't seem to be strong enough for household use. So...what DO you use it for? I have quite a bit in my supply stash and I just can't bear to throw anything out...

I use it for crafts.. Anything I cannot sew... Paper , Wood, etc... Have you tried the new kind ?? It is only 1 texture and sticks to itself... No more Hook side and loop side..I love it.. So easy to sew in also..

I use it for kids costumes, when I don't want to sew closures (I mean they're only used for that one night), and for underneath decorative things (such as buttons that are only for show.) I sew it by hand around the outside so as not to have to deal with the adhesive bit - it only takes a quick slip stitch just to kinda baste it and its on. Works for bibs too. Otherwise, nothing. I feel for you - my one pack lasts FOREVER.

I use it in my classroom, I'm considered the velcro queen. No, not to hold children in their chairs I teach special needs students who need individual picture schedules so I put them up with velcro for the children to remove as they go through the day. I also use it to make matching games for the children, to hang instuctional items on boards, etc...............

I recently bought some that sticks on and then you fuse it down with an iron for a permanent bond. Haven't tried it yet but got it for tote bags. I hope it works.

Ah yes, Velcro, the sewer's duct tape. Velcro can be used for almost everything including holding your machine foot pedal to a mouse pad to keep it from walking away when you're sewing.

I alos use it for match games at school. We made a great game for Black History, with squares with an inventor's name, the invention, and a photo. Put the velcro "dots" in 3 rows of 3 and the kids had to stick the correct trios together. (Put the other side of the dot on squares with the answers.)

You can also do neat maps, putting dots on islands or continents and corresponsing dots in the ocean.

I'm with Heather. It is useless -sewn on and stick to itself velcro are fine. But the stick on only sticks as long as you don't have to remove or separate the pieces - then they both come - doesn't seem to matter what it is placed on. Great if you don't have to separate the pieces but the minute you try to remove one piece one or the other 'stuck on' comes off. I've even reapplied with crazy glue and got the same effect. I would like to know from those who like it, just how much pressure you have in your fingers to either apply the pieces or remove it without everything coming.

Thanks for that foot pedal idea - I gotta go buy some velcro! My foot pedal slips all over the carpet!

If you have a lot of velcro and you're not using it - sell it on ebay - you wouldn't belive some of the stuff you can sell on there!

I'm sure someone, somewhere has a use for it.

The only thing I've used it for is making cord wraps. I make small strips, using a heavy duty needle to sew the sticky back on a heavy fabric, or just placed a thin fabric on there and it holds with no sewing. I then sew a piece of the "fuzzy" part, to the "prickly" part.

Once you have this assembled, I use them to wrap around my cords, behind my computer, behind my sewing machine, behing the tv. You wrap it around, plut the two together, and walla, they stick together and keep your cords rolled up out of the way.

I know you can buy these - but they are expensive. Since they are so easy to make, and if you have the velcro . . .
You Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm, and place their trust in you. Isaiah 26:3, AV

The one time I used the stick on kind, I just remembered to hold each piece firmly when pulling it open, so that I did not pull the whole thing up by accident.. That is aggravating, but it is a way to save from doing something all over again.. Besides, like I said earlier, I use the new kind now that sticks to itself... Its so easy, now..

I am happy to say that I finally found a good use for this, and it's related to sewing! I was just putting together a muslin for the bodice of a dress, planning to have some folks at my sewing guild meeting tonight check the back for fit. I was looking around for a zipper to put in it temporarily--I wouldn't be modest at a fitting, except the meeting is in a large fabric store! I could only find little skirt zippers, so I decided to use up the rest of my sticky-back velcro instead. I only need it to hold things in place while I get pinned a bit. I stuck it in the seam allowance, right up the center back.

Sounds good Andrea. I will have to keep some on hand for just this situation! :whacky:

Well, I wouldn't go out an buy it just for that... It held things in place, but I did have that same old problem--the velcro sticks to itself better than most other things! I did get the fitting feedback I needed though, and that's all I care about!
