Hello, I am new to sewing, I want to know if a rolled edge could be done on a sewing machine and if so how? I don't have a serger. I am just learning how to use a sewing machine and would love to do rolled edge on my gauze fabric. Please help! Thanks,

It is possible to do a rolled edge on a sewing machine. There is a foot that is available. If you have that foot we'll be glad to give you directions. It comes in 1/8 and 1/4 (3/8 and I think 1 inch too)...most common are the first two and it varies by brand as to what is out there. These feet are commonly used in finishing curtains, ruffles, shirt edges, all kinds of things.

Now, assuming that you don't have the foot, the easy way is to decide how large you want your hem...1/4 is easier than 1/8 inch, 3/8 is easier still..it is rather up to you. You just take a warm iron, fold your fabric and press twice that amount..if it were to be 1/8 you would press 1/4 inch. A 1/4 inch hem would take a 1/2 inch press. Once you have gone all the way around with your pressing, then open the fold and fold it in half toward the inside incasing the raw edge in the hem. If you are dealing with crinkle gauze this will be a bit harder. I wouldn't do a "hard" press on the edge, just lightly press the edge with the tip of the iron to make sure that it creases. You'll need to twist and roll when you finish if it is crinkle gauze.

There is a special foot for it. Pam explains how to use it very well. I can't get it to work.
Here is how I did it recently. It takes longer my way, I'm sure.
I ran a line of stitches about 1/2 inch from the edge and turned it up along the stitching. I sewed that down about 1/8 inch from the outer edge. It is easier if you use a longer stitch and a walking foot.
I trimmed it very close to the stitching and turned it up again as small as possible.
My garment had pointed corners and I did each straight piece without trying to pivot at the corner.

Someone told me to use a hemming foot and a close togather zig zag and it would make the material roll. I am not sure if it will work but could be worth a try.

Hi Ladies, I have a Brother Disney Sewing Machine, I do not have a serger. So there is a foot that I can attach to my regular sewing machine? I will look for it. I am a begginer sewer, so I am new to all this.

Thanks so much,

There is a foot -- but you have to have Pam come show you how to use it.

I can tell you how to do it but if you go to a dealer to get the foot see if they will demo it for you. It is so much easier if you see it in "action"...if you need my help just yell!

I use Dorothy's method always. Gave up on the foot a long time ago.
