Hello everyone!

I am considering opening a sewing business to sew girl's clothing, since there is nothing modest and very feminine in the stores. If I sew baby or girl's sleepwear, MUST it be from flame retardant fabric, or can I use flannel & cotton? Also: does anyone think there is a paying market for this? Thanks!

From my understanding if you're going to sell it publicly, then yes it would need to be the flame retardant stuff. As to if there's a market, again yes depending on your area and what you're planning. I would look at the boutique type places in your area to see if there is a market at all.

One idea would be to browse what is available as far as sleepwear in the stores. I say this because a few weeks ago at the mall, there was 100% cotton sleepwear available. I forget the store...rats. I do think there was a disclaimer on the hangtag, though. Also consider the companies who market the organic clothing. I am sure that organic clothing cannot be loaded with flame retardant chemicals...just a thought. If you would like to use the beautiful non-flame retardant fabrics for your clothing, do a little more research. Here is some more reading for you:

-be sure to have food handy, this site is not too user friendly

Hope this helps

Hi Adrienne!
Good luck with your sewing business! I was thinking if you want to make sleepwear but don't want to mess with the flame retardent, you could just call it loungewear. I hope that helps!

It has to either be flame retardant or tight fitting (with the tags that say garment must be tightfitting etc). You can call it loungewear as someone suggested but I hear that they are cracking down on that too. There was a company - I will see if I can find the name, that sold a solution that you could make your fabric flame retardant. Joanns was carrying some flame retardant fabric in the nursery/kids section last time I was there too.

Good Luck :)
