My doctor is insisting that I have a colonoscopy since I have not had one in the last 10 years. I have never expressed that I am having or have had any problems in that area. However, he is insisting that I need one to be sure there are no problems now that I'm almost at the magic geriactric age, Yuuucccckkkk!!!

Has anyone in your family had colon cancer? My uncle died of colon cancer and his 2 children and his twin sister were advised to have a colonoscopy every few years...don't remember how many...maybe every 5? Apparently it can run in families. And if caught early, it is one of the easiest to "cure".

Never had that one, but I feel for you. My MIL had one recently and I got to hear about it.

My great aunt died of colon cancer a couple of years ago. Hers was too far gone when it was discovered, so it's a good idea to get that test done. Better safe than sorry.

I have had most of the oscopies except joint, which is a hoot because I would love them to go in a clear out junk in one or two joints. I do not like them at all, especially the stomach. My cousin, age 64, lives in Seattle and has to have a colonoscopy every 2 years as part of her medical plan. When I heard that I was blown away. Her father is 98 yr and never been sick a day in his life - we often laugh about it because he is always been deaf and we think he is healthy because he doesn't hear all the bad news in the world, though he has buried 2 wives. He is also one of the most laid back individuals I have ever met in my life, and handsome . We do have cancer risks in the family but they are female related. Every female in our family, both sides in fact, for the past 2 generation has died of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. A lot of brothers married sisters so we are related in many ways.

I doubt screening colonoscopies would be done here in BC. What about Ont, Judee, or NS, mommy dionne?

Their GP refers them due to their family history. Nope is it not a standard test.

I had a total, absolutely thorough  checkup done a couple of months ago. No colonoscopy but loads of blood tests and specimens. Everything was cool. :bg:

Due to family history I have to have one every 5 years. Not fun. I think the worst part is the prep. All I can say about that is use lots of diaper rash cream to protect that delicate skin there :bg: If you've ever had any type of abdominal surgery, even just a D&C, request a pediatric scope. My doc also gives meds so that you are in a twilight state and don't remember too much of the actual procedure. Now if they could give me something so I don't remember the prep I'd be OK with all this.

One thing I forgot...I don't know if this happens to everyone or not, but I volunteered to drive my cousin to the appointment and to bring her home afterwards. She was given some lime greenish stuff to drink before going. My aunt had told me to bring lots of plastic bags...in case she was sick in the car on the 20 minute drive to the clinic for the test. Well I would definitely advise this, as I was "super" glad I had them. I was almost there and you can all guess what happened!

Thanks guys for the encouragement!!! :bolt: I'm really looking forward to having this done to me. I do have an aunt (one of my mother's sisters died with colon cancer). My doctor is doing this as a precautionary since I've reached "old age".

Patsy, I feel for you. My dr. has "suggested" it but I've put it off so far. Seems to be 50ish is a magic age here in the states where they start pushing it. Let us know how it goes.

I have to have one every five years and now they put you to sleep. They didn't with the first one I had and it wasn't bad at all. But everyone's different and i'm sure there's a reason for putting people out now. anyway, it's a good idea to get tested and your Doctor should be given a lollypop for suggesting it to you. good for him.

Think of it this way (I know I've had to in the past few years, I can't count the tests I've had). If you have the test - no matter how uncomfortable - and the test shows all is well, you will have peace of mind concerning that area of your health.

Blessings!

Well, I am pushing 80 and I never go to the doctor unless she cuts off my 3 prescriptions so I will come in. I have never had a symptom (7 babies did have a few symptoms!!!); I always feel fine. But I had to have several things involving some surgery last fall. I went to the ER about 2 a.m. (my SonIL took me) because I woke up coughing so badly I couldn't catch my breath. They thought I had pneumonia. But it turned out I had a gall bladder full of stones--not one twinge of indigestion or anything!---and after they removed that they found I had a loose stone lodged in my bile duct--again not a twinge of any kind--so they removed that, and found I had a mass in my ovarian cavity. Two gynocologists were absolutely sure I had cancer (I have a bad history) and I had to have quarts (or litres) of fluid drained from my chest cavity 5 times before they decided to remove everything removable, and guess what, NO cancer, thank Heaven. One doctor was determined to do a colonoscopy, but the gynocologist decided it was more imperative to remove the presumed cancer, and did that and they decided a colonoscopy was unnecessary! So I still have never had one, but the doctors seem to think I'll likely live to be 90! I told them I really don't want to live through another war! MariLynntex

After waiting for several weeks and dreading to have the colonoscopy done, I ended up today having to reschedule. I started drinking the gallon of lemon-lime flavored "soapy water" that cost dh $40.00 to fill the presription for and after about 5 or 6 eight ounce glasses that I gagged down, my stomach started rebelling and I ended up having dry heaves for a couple of hours, then at 2:15 this morning, my reflux reared it's ugly head and I was really, really sick then. I called the doctor at 9:15 a.m. to inform him that I had to cancel because I had been sick all night and he was a little upset that I or my dh didn't call him. I informed him that I didn't know calling him in the middle of the night was an option. He said he would have stopped the liquid and called in a prescription for the nausea and a different prep method for me. Anyway, he was very nice and his nurse called me back later with a new appointed and they are sending me a new prep method (probably enemaes) and another appointment for the scope in 2 weeks.

doesn't sound like fun Patsy - hope it goes better in a fortnight.

Marilynn - is there anything left inside of you? It sounds like they did a thorough clean out while they were there and got rid of any spare bits....

Please have your test done, the prep is the worst thing, just stay in the bathroom. The Doctor kept 16" of my colon and my gall bladder was dead.So they kept it too. No cancer tho. Netta

I had worms as a kid...(Dr suspected it was from eating dog food outside...yeah I was a weird kid) the whole family had to take a nasty green liquid that came in a gigantic bottle.
I don't let anyone near my rear end..I don't care what a Dr wants..:nervous:

Okay everyone I finally had the colonoscopy done and I am a model patient. The doctor gave me a new prep prescription that wasn't by any stretch of the imagination yummy but far easier than trying to get a gallon of soapy water down. The test itself was fine, I guess, I don't know because I was out cold. At the hospital outpatient department everyone was exceptionally nice and efficient and concerned that I was comfortable and not nervous or afraid of being put to sleep. Went in at 12:30 p.m. and was home at about 2:45 p.m. but went back to sleep at 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; was up until 11:30 or so and then out again until 7:30 this morning. No problems found and don't have to even think about it again for 5 years. It's not as bad as everyone made it sound but there are other things I'd rather go through, given my choice.
