I have been piecing tops for a while, but always sent them out for quilting. I am doing my first King size quilt myself. What I am wondering is: How much thread do I need for the quilting? I plan to do an average amount of quilting, nothing real tight, probably at least an inch apart everywhere. I plan to use the stipple or honeybee meandering pattern. Can anyone give me a suggestion of how much thread I need to get? Thanks for your help! |

I saw this post yesterday and thought I would let others reply as I find this a difficult question to answer. So much depends on the quilt size, thread weight, thread spool yardage and how dense the quilting will be. It is always different due to these factors. I am trying to remember...for a 72x72 quilt, I think I used 7 - 350 yds spools of 50 wt thread (same thread for top & bottom) but for another twin size quilt with not a lot of quilting, I used 2 1/2 - 500 yd spool of 40 wt varigated thread just for the top and had to buy a third spool of 500 yd 50wt thread for the bottom just because I ran out at the last minute. My suggestion is, if possible, to try to ensure that whatever thread you buy that you are able to pick up more somewhere close by should you run out! Maybe others will be of more help. TTFN from

Thanks Judee, I stopped at my local quilt shop and picked up 3000yds for a King size quilt. I think it will be enough, I don't think my skills are enough to quilt very tight! I will get there. BBQ |

Bluebug...I just received the latest copy of Quiltmaker magazine and they had this info that they reprinted with permission from Superior Threads website. Thought I would post it as it may help you and others in the future. How Much Thread Does it Take? (http://www.superiorthreads.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=269&Itemid=100) TTFN from
