Is anyone making new clothing for school yet? Our school goes year round and they start again next week. This will be neice's first year. She is so excited. She asked me to make her some new cloths. I let her go into my stash and she chose a frog print , care bear, and some yellow. She requested her name on all. A friend of mine went to the mall and found a cute idea it was a simple a line with capris, it had embroidered on it "watch out kindergarden here I come" with some school supplies on it. I thought this would be cute for her first day. She wants a school bus instead of the school supplies. I would love to see what everyone else is doing I will post pics as soon as I am finished.

I hope to start sewing clothes for the new school year next week. I never did get to all that summer sewing I had planned to do. School starts on August 21st so I am now trying to plan a few mix and match outfits. Usually it is still rather hot until mid October so I'm planning on a few pairs of capris and longer length shorts for the beginning. I'll probably purchase a few tops. I still feel like I am waiting until the last minute though.

I've been doing a little sewing for my dgd for school. They are moving (which is breaking my heart) to Tx and I don't know when school starts but the little bugger decided to suddenly have a grownth spurt and everything is alarmingly short! I'll have her for two more weeks while her mom moves so I plan to get a few things made while I have her here to measure. She has lived us since birth except for 10 mos when we have had her 24 hrs a day 4-5 days a week while her mom worked.

She is pre-K so I can do some things that would be too "little" for school. I did some darling embroidered overalls with ribbons at the bottom and pocket..just geting ready to glitz them.

I was always relieved when my kids did their growing in the summer. In two weeks time my dgd's mom went from size 12 girls to size 5 petite jrs (first week) and then sized 5 jrs the next... bypassing completely the size 14 wardrobe that I had bought for the next school year (on sale of course).

School in Texas starts in the middle of August, I think here in Round Rock it's starting on the 14th or something. Mine aren't in school yet, so don't know for sure.

Thank you, Ticia! They are moving to Lubbock. Do you think that sounds about right all over Tx? That is about when our school would have started here too. If I put my mind to it I can have a pretty decent school wardrobe in the two weeks I'll have her.

Pam, I think sewing like crazy is a good way to keep your mind off the fact you're going to miss them.... But if anyone could whip together a beautiful wardrobe, it would be you.

Ah, Patty, what a sweet thing to say! I've been so blue all day every since I watched that U-Haul drive out this morning. I'll probably be able to hold together (mostly) until the little one is gone, but it is rough. I'm teaching and playing piano tomorrow so I have something to keep me busy today...just one day at a time. As soon as the little one is gone, my youngest is moving to college and I need to get her wardrobe ready too...we just found out that she is getting an unfurnished college apt, complete with private laundry and kitchen..curtains and things to make. Her twin is thinking of moving to N. Carolina for a job (beautiful state...maybe I should go too?)

If not the 14th, then at most a week later. So, sew up a storm and have a blast.

Oh Pam, I have a heavy heart for you. I remember my husband was upset that I didn't get all moody or upset when we dropped off my middle two at college seven years ago. Of course he didn't know that I had my moments to myself in my sewing room  Now, three of them are moving next month: ds #2 is moving from PA to New York City, dd #3 is moving from her apartment (too expensive) to sharing a house with another grad student, and dd #4 is moving into an apartment in Philly. We physically can't help #3 because she lives too far away, but she is coming home for a week in August before her move.

In September it will be back to my husband, ds #1 and myself and life will be quiet  . To get through all of it, I'm telling my husband that I want to cook Thanksgiving dinner in NYCity at my son's and go see the Macy's parade. It helps to have something to look forward to to help refocus......that and sewing!

Put some growth pleats in the hems of your dgd dresses. I say if they were popular in the 1860's it is time for them to come back into style!

All of my kids grew up with them. I bought her a cute pair of overalls at Old Navy and then embroidered all over. They were about 1/2 inch too long but I added about 1 inch of ribbon to the bottom so I put growth pleats in them so they can be taken out. She is so skinny...poor kid. If she were a boy you could buy slims but I don't know that you can buy them for girls. She grew 4 inches in the waste about a week ago though and I know what that means although I'm already seeing it in her shorts which are suddenly obscene..and her huge shoes are all too short!!

As for the empty house thing? Last summer all summer until the end of October we served 7-9 at EVERY meal...now most of our meals have 2-4 (including the daughter moving and hers). My other dd is working and my ds (the twins) are spending as much time as possible with his friends because they all have traveling jobs! It is an adjustment!

I'm thrilled about the college student though even if she did choose the rival college! We'll laugh and enjoy it!!!

Mine were both only 20 minutes away even after the youngest went off to college so it was really kind of fun having the house to ourselves but seeing the girls whenever we wanted (especially if we were buying dinner).
It upset me more than I thought it would when the youngest went to law school in New York City. Now with the oldest going to Buffalo it will really be hard.

How do you get the empty nest? DD (22) moved back home when she decided she was going to school for the wrong degree. She doesn't make enough to live on her own & pay off the college loans and she doesn't drive so transportation is a problem. DS (almost 20) works full time& really wants to move but he is a Temp worker on the job right now & has just enrolled in community college in the fall. Ds 17 just graduated high school & has a job working for the school district TV channel but only about 10 hrs. a week & minimum wage. I told him school or find another job in the fall. DD (almost 15) is still in high school & is probably the first 1 that will be able to move out. DGS are here everyday while mom works.DD (25) has moved out but gets upset if we do anything fun & don't invite her. I love them! I know I will miss them when they are all gone but sometimes I would like a day with an empty house for at least a few hrs.

Barb --
It's a lot easier to get rid of two than six, I'm sure.
Mine say I did a good job raising them since they are secure enough to leave and that I taught them well since neither had kids before they were ready. But I'M ready for that grand baby now!!

Dorthy I guess I should have stopped at 2 they were easy 1st 1 moved out by 20 with a baby (she was ready, even if I wasn't). the 2nd went away to college & didn't move back because we had too many rules. But if I only had 2 I wouldn't have all the joys these last 4 have brought me! They do frustrate me at times but other times I can't imagine my life without them.

Well, I had seven. All of them went to the University of Texas and we only lived about a mile away and they rode the UT shuttle bus all the time. I mostly had at least 2 in college, 3 in Austin High School, and 2 in Casis elementary school all at the same time!! The first morning I was in the house all alone I felt like skipping around singing, "I'm free! I'm free!" Then my DH came home saying the office was so busy he was going to work at home till lunch time, then the two boys came home from their early college classes saying they were hungry! Next thing I knew it was 3p.m. and the 2 girls came home wanting food before going to dancing class and art class and last, here came the two youngest boys, and of course, they are ALWAYS wanting food before baseball practices!! Any my piano students were arriving!Did I say something about free time?? MariLynntex

I worked at home and finding time for that was tough with kids running in and out. Sometimes it seemed like every kid in the village hung out here. The village park is in our backyard and we had a fridge full of sandwiches and soda and a bathroom.
And at dinner time there were always extra hungry kids. They had food at home but parents that worked outside the home and, believe it or not, they liked the sit down dinners at my house -- even with my cooking.
Somehow if you work at home it doesn't seem to other people like you really work. Even now people say how lucky I am not to have to work!!
Well I'll tell you I have it rough! I had to go to the beach today and talk to people for a story I'm doing.
Talk about sacrifice for the job. The sun was shining, the lake was beautiful at 76 degrees and my friend Gary's winery is right down the road.
It's a hard life for me.

Barb,
Try This.. set aside one afternoon or morning a week. Or to start , maybe once every 2 weeks, and make the rule and stick to it.. Mom's time to be alone and refresh her mind.. Then, do exactly what you want to do or do nothing at all, if that is what you want, but do NOT allow anyone to interrupt you.. Make it clear that this is an unbreakable rule, because they will try you on it.. Everyone needs some time alone that is only up to you to fill and you must be able to do it without guilt.. Getting to that point is the hard part, but everyone alive has a need like that.. When I was a young mother, we could not even afford for me to go to a movie, so I would got to the branch library not far away, and sit and read for an hour or two..Or do research, or cross stitch or other embroidery. Sometimes I just sat and daydreamed.. In nice weather I would go to the park and sit in the middle of the rose garden.. I love the look and aroma of roses.. Try to get a schedule .. You will be surprised what it will do for your peace of mind..

I do that when I retreat to my sewing room. Everyone knows Mom needs a break. I have been doing that quite a bit lately & know that when my DD just comes & stands in the doorway I need to take time for her too. Once the Grandkids go home for the day I usually retreat to my room & read or to the sewing room. It just isn't the same! I was looking forward to all the kids being gone & me having time alone but now that I am back to work I only get a day off when school is closed then I have at least 1 home or it rains & DH doesn't work. I think I have just been a little down lately thinking about turning 50 & my job was in jeapordy & DH work has dropped by about 1/3 this yr. so on top of everything else I feel guilty if I spend money to go to lunch with friends. Thanks for the suggestion though. I will try to get home from work early at least once a week when school starts & spend that time on me ( I might let hubby in once it gets cold out).

Libby,
I really love your idea of uninterrupted time. I'll have to implement that here. I especially like the peace of mind part! It does feel so good to make something though, I think I get irritated when I don't get to make things with my hands. Sewing, crafting, painting, cross stitch, gardening, etc. really seem to fill my soul or something. I think I'll call my uninterrupted time "Mom's Mental Health Time". Seems appropriate for me!

And you know the saying "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." So, Mom's mental health time is very important, now if only I can remember that myself.

Think my middle child (now 30) came up with the idea for Sewing With A Purpose (or was the inspiration for Garanimals). She was very strong-willed and once she decided on what she wanted, that was it.

When she was six she fell in love with a bright yellow fabric with red print flowers. I made her a blouse and skirt from the fabric. Everything else had to be red or yellow that year or she didn't want it and wouldn't wear it. Actually made sewing and buying clothing (not to mention her matching clothes) a lot easier. Red overalls. Red leggings. Red pants. Red T. Red jacket. Red jumper. Repeat it all in yellow. Imagine her teachers thought she (or I) was a bit obsessive/compulsive.

Thank goodness the next year she fell in love with a lavender-teal-fuschia shirt. We got to work with three colors that year.

I was wondering if anyone has seen a pattern for a twirl skirt that has the patches of material going almost diagonally. Almost looks like a gored kiddie skirt. My friend wants me to attempt one for her dd for school. She said they are called something like redondo or rodondo twirl skirts. Any ideas?

Well, I don't have the chance to sew that often and I am new at it so I have started to sew my children 16 months and 3 months (see I have both hands full) for the winter.

I love pastels and colorful outfits on my little girl but she has been being a messy eater - so for christmas I have been going with more patterns and a little darker.

I'll post pics in a couple days as I have finished a skirt but not the shirt.

Does anyone have any tips on finding fabric at reasonable prices? With variety?

okay - I found a pattern that I think is what I am looking for. The pattern is made by Studio Tantrum. Has anyone used them before - I have never heard of them. It says you must add your own seam allowances - I feel a seam ripper preparing to be used - alot.

http://fabrichound.com/store/index.php?cPath=19_29

I hope that link works - I have never tried that before.

If anyone has made similar - please let me know

Thanks!!

Pam -
I am doing similar to what you are doing for back to school for my great nieces. Buying overalls and adding cute factor to them. I have a quick question for you - when you are working on the legs do you rip out the seams and make the legs "flat" to work on them. I have done that on one pair and it seemed rather thick to sew the seams back in. I cannot figure out any other way to decorate the legs.

Oh and by the way - since we live so close - if you are missing having kids in your house I'll send a few your way. Mine are at the age where they can never be alone so I usually have 4-5 spares!! Just kidding - I will be thinking of you during this transition time.

Soon I am going to make them twirly skirts from the pattern that is on this forum. I want to do them sort of patch work so I am waiting to finish projects I am working on now so that I will have enough co-ordinating scrapplettes to make them. I am really anxious to get to that project.

I've done some adult jeans by turning them inside out but the last pair I did and the overalls I did required that I take out that leg seam because the embroidery was wide and extended into the thigh. On the jeans there was a flat fell seam there...on the overalls it was no problem...it was just a plain seam that had been serged and chainstitched.

For the jeans that had the flat fell I followed directions I had seen at a club meeting. I cut right up against the flat fell and I took out all the excess strings and fabric that might show from under the flat fell seam (remains of the connected side.) I serged the raw edge of the other side of that cut...all the way up to the end. Then I embroidered the jeans. When I got everything done, I "scissored" the flat fell over the cut/serged edge of the jeans and using thread that matched the jeans and a jeans needle in my machine, and I sewed up the edge of the flat fell. I sewed a second seam to help support that seam further into the jean where the fabric was overlapped (still in the flat fell of the jeans). They've been worn and laundered (and I didn't get a frantic call from Harkins' Theater) and seem to be doing just fine.

On the overalls, I just took the seam out. Since I put ribbon on the bottom, I also took out the hem and cut the hem at the second fold (where the seam is enclosed) just to get the bulk out. I serged the edges of those pants and resewed them after I had done all the embrodery. I serged the cut edge of the bottom and just folded the bottoms up, added the ribbon and then did a fancy embellishing stitch from the machine around the bottom (faster than embroidery). Since they were the right length without the ribbons I added two 1/4 inch growth tucks in the bottom of the jean.

By the way, give me a week or two and I may be wanting some more kids...I'll know who to contact!!!! We take the dgd down to Lubbock this Sat (long sad trip) and my youngest will start moving to OSU next week because band starts up a week from Sun. Her twin brother has gotten a job in Edmond (as of today) so he may end up staying a while but he is always gone with his friends. There is still a chance that he may now end up in North Carolina...if he goes there I may never get him back because it is a lovely state!!

Pam - thanks for the info on the seams - I may contact you again when I start ripping out just to make sure I understood the direstions correctly.

My youngest DD just recently got back from North Carolina. She flew out there by herself (gulp - I can't believe I actually let her go) to visit some friends from church. She really liked it and was overwhelmed by all the trees. Something we definately lack. Luckily Stillwater and Edmond are not too far away. My oldest DD was considering OSU until I said we would not let her commute. She may never leave home - LOL!! Sometimes I think I am looking forward to an empty house b/c ours is always so full, but on the rare occassions when no one is home it is just too quiet. My thoughts are with you.

I should be around to contact...no problem. Where do you live?

DS landed a job near Edmond and he drove there this morning. I used to work for Hertz at Penn and Hefner (15 years) so I know the drive (he is really at 122 and Santa Fe)....not too far from there. He is so exicted. DGD is in Lubbock this morning and DD is packing this week for her move. Funny how all the years between the kids are suddenly so close! DD said that she needed some time with her twin brother last week and they went out shopping together (made me happy). It is definately the passing of an era.

Time for me to move on to new things!

I live in Norman - north of Robinson, west of I-35. It will be a few days before I get to the pair of overalls that needs the seam ripped out. After I read your post I ran to Old Navy on my lunch hour and looked at their overalls. That is definately what I should have bought. The ones I bought are Osh Kosh and have really really thick seams. I may scratch my plans for the ones I have and go buy some Old Navy ones because their seams look a whole lot easier to deal with. It is so nice knowing that someone is an e-mail away with help. I am teaching myself to sew as I go, I probably would have given up if I had not found this site - and then to find Okies here to boot!

I was in your Wal Mart the other day. While there I noticed they had a huge "fan" shop so I thought I might find a pair of OSU shorts for band camp (hers haven't come in yet)...but NO...nothing ORANGE in site..only crimson and cream and then I remembered where I was....

I bought the ones from Old Navy and they were easy to take apart. As it was about all I had left from the crotch seam was the bartack at the center but they were super easy to sew and serge back. At the time I was there I didn't see any on the girls' side. Mine came from the boys side of the store.

I was looking in the boy's department, too. Yesterday I made each niece a ribbon t-shirt. I sewed 5 lengths of coordinating ribbon length ways across the chest and then embroidered their names above that. First time I had attempted anything like that and it turned out great. I was so happy!! Of course I did not make the shirts - I bought them already made and just ripped out the side seams. I am not brave enough to tackle knit yet. Then I tried to use my gathering foot for an overall project. 2 ruffles turned out great and then everything soared downhill in an innertube on ice. I cannot get the foot to gather anymore - the bobbin keeps jamming with massive amounts of thread. I tried changing the bobbin and tried every tension possible. I battled it for 2 hours and never got the 3rd piece ruffled. I love to put ruffles on everything and had been doing it by hand. I was so excited to get this foot because the ruffles that are made like that look sooooo much better than mine. Now I am discouraged with it, but will tackle it again. The ruffles are all I lack for these overalls and I cannot wait to complete them - they are my favorite so far. So frustrating.

Funny you should say that about our Wal-Mart. I was in the Belle Isle one last week and noticed that their fan shop had orange and thought that was the strangest thing to have there. Guess I was far enough north. EVERYTHING where we live is crimson and cream. The ice cream stores and snow cone stands even have "crimson and cream" flavors. It gets really silly, but is fun.

I made this for a friend of mine who teaches and the baby isn't due until November so the recipiant WILL be at school for a while.....

I just love seeing little babies in Aran sweaters - this is a 3 month-6 month size (she is a bit large) so should fit for the spring /early summer. Yes, she is expecting a boy.
