This is the top for my author-illustrator Quilt that my husband and I started collecting blocks for in the 1990's. If you advance the photo frame you can see the detail of a couple of them. They are all fun and reflect the individual that created them; they are all our favorites. The authors and illustrators blocks are by:

Greg Hildebrant, Trina Schart Hyman, Gary Kelley, Patience Brewster, Rosemary Wells, Dee de Rosa, Mary Jane Auch, Steven Kellogg, Jerry Pickney, Bernard Waber, Jane Yolen, Marc Brown, K.Y. Craft, Virginia Hamilton, Chris Van Allsburg, Kevin Henke, David Christiana, David Shannon, Peter Siss, John Schoenherr, Patricia Polacco, Dominic Catalono, Ed Young, Laurent de Brunhoff, Robert Sabuda, Eric Carle, Diane and Leo Dillon, Tedd Arnold, Lane Smith and Maurice Sendak.

I need to get a border done and then it's going up in my family room in a quilt frame and where we have some air conditioning :bluewink:

What a treasure. If you don't mind me asking, how did you acquire all the blocks?

Patty --
How about a story in the neighbors section of the Post?
Call me if you are interested and I'll try pitching it to my editor.
There might be a problem with you in Skaneateles -- but I have done things on Skaneateles before.
Get me out of the museums and parks for a change.

Detective work, meeting them at book signings, and having acquired some of their artwork. It was an adventure and they were very generous in sharing themselves with our family. I have often contemplated if I should give it to a library for the children's section, however, some blocks are personalized with our name, and the public wouldn't get that connection.

Patty, what a great quilt!! How fortunate you are that the authors/illustrators were willing to be so generous.

I'm dying for more close-ups of the blocks. The few you had were adorable. So, did you bring the cloth for them to draw on, or are these scanned pictures? I'm just trying to figure out how to do it.

Ticia,

I sent fabric and they drew directly on the cloth with permanent markers. Illustrations are copyrighted and therefore can't be scanned from children's books. :bluesad:

I was working on the border today and hopefully I will have it in the frame by tomorrow.

I know the books aren't scannable, but I thought maybe you had gotten drawings on paper and scanned them to put on the cloth. I'll have to try that because it seems like a really neat idea.

What a treasure that is ! ! ! A couple of years ago, when our public Library had Novello series The childrens authors and illustrators were all together for several hours for the children to get autographs.. I had suggested to my GS the night before that he make an autograph book so he did and most of the illustrators were so taken with the idea that he made it, that they drew him a special picture along with the autograph.. It was quite a day for us..every author and illustrator had some comment about it..

Libby......how nice for your GS to have that treasure.

Isn't it wonderful when the authors reach out to the little kids (and their parents). But Libby, what a great suggestion for your GS.

Ten years ago I had sketched the pattern for the quilt and it was going to have an elaborate design incorporating the blocks making it part of a flower to go along with the title. I really think this sketch was a mental block for me because I just decided to pitch the pattern and wing it and this way the design doesn't take away from the signature blocks. I am going to hand quilt in a large sunflower design in the left border where there is quite a bit of gold/yellow/saffron solid fabric.

Oh well....time to get back to basting.... :coffee: and some refreshments.....
