I have heard that when you buy Sulky by the yard from a bolt of it, that it should be kept covered or it will dry out. I was wondering what all of you who have used this feel this is true or not? I know there are a lot of different type of stablizers out on the market and many use different kinds, but this question has come up nuremous times at work and no one seems to really know. So I am just asking to see what you all think.

I keep all my stabilizers covered. But then I have a lot plus we have high humidty here in s.w. FL. I use plastic wrap & the bags the newspaper is delivered in at times. I keep them out of the sunlight as well. Have never had a problem. Also I don't want dust to get on them. If I have small pieces of the water solvy I put those in a small plastic bag as you can desolve them in a small amout of water & paint that onto your fabric to use. When dry of course. Also if pieces are larger you can barely wet an edge of one piece & stick another one to it to make a large enough piece to use in your hoop. I use pretty wine racks to store the most used ones & the rest of my stash is in a huge basket on a shelf. Also when you open a roll or buy it by the yard keep the directions & the name of it with that stabilizer. Some are easily confused as to what they are for. This is just how I do mine. Some one else may have a different way of doing it.

That is a very good method, Beachgirl. Of course, I think so because it is similar to what I do down in this humid climate. One thing about humidity, it is good for the complexion! Keeps your skin soft. Those newspaper bags are useful items; so are the veggie bags at the grocery store. MariLynntex

I've never seen Sulky stabilizer on a bolt...it only comes in plastic bags here.
I usually buy OESD. It comes on a roll in a plastic container, the ends pop off and on...so my stabilizer is always neat and clean. If you go to a 'box' store or office supply store I think you can buy mailing tubes and do the same thing. Keeps everything neat, clean, and you can label the tubes, so you always know what you have.

I keep mine in a plastic bag, too. If it dries out, it tends to separate from the release paper.

Bet ya'll can tell I'm a waste not want not person. I even use those plastic grocery bags to put inside my paper shredder. It's easier to dump the stuff. The tubes are also great for storing large patterns, if you make your own patterns. I roll them up, stick them in a tube & write on the outside what it is. Now, not for regular patterns you buy. I make my own patterns for chair cushions that are kind of odd sizes, chaise lounges & stuff like that. I hate searching for stuff plus like things neat. Doesn't always happen in the sewing room though.I do lose things sometime & have to search. Drives me crazy. I swear I have a gremlin that gets in here at times.

Beach Girl - thank you, thank you, thank you for it idea of a bag in the paper shredder. Mine is currently foaming up like a bottle of shaken coke and I have been just too hot to empty it knowing I have to get the vacuum out after. Oh the things we learn.

I have pixies at my house, instead of gremlins and they certainly can be a hazzle. I have had them put patterns I have made into my box of unused pattern material and I have cut them up in error! Reading about tubes makes me think of using paper towel and other tissue rolls to store them in.

Yes Gal,the paper towel holders will work also. I have a real large tube where I'd bought some tablecloth fabric & I use that for some real large patterns I have. Then I ask at the fabric stores for their empty cardboards that fabric come on as they just throw them away & use that to wrap large yardage of my fabric on. Then I cover it with a piece of muslin or whatever so it won't get dusty or something on it. Lets just hope that your pixies & my gremlins don't get together & think of more things to do to us. LOL.

I use Floriania and Sulky. The Floriania comes in a plastic wrap that I push up in the cardboard thingy so I know what it is until it's all gone. I put the water soluable in a large baggie and then in my plastic drawers (like chest of drawers) you can get those at WalMart. The ones I got work well because the top drawers are smaller and the bottom drawer is much larger and they hold the larger stablizer rolls. The stablizer I buy by the yard I fold and put in those drawers also. It keeps them clean and out of the way but handy.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I keep all my stabilizer on a roller holder in my sewing room. Since OESD has started using the tubes I use their tubes and pop the ends off. Then I just put the tube and the stabilizer on the holder. I was keeping my water solvy stabilizers in a drawer in a plastic bag (before the new packaging with the tubes) and it was so sticky I couldn't use it. I was told to leave it out 24 hours and give it a try. I guess it was getting too much moisture in the tube because since then I've kept all my stabilizers on the rack and I've never had another problem.

It is something that I kind of invented from using paper towel holders. I used to have a large one (can't find it since the move) in my old house in the sewing area when I was sewing professionally. I used it to hold plastic bags of different sizes, interfacing and tracing paper. When I started using stabilizer I had my hubby come up with one for stabilizer. It keeps the stabilizer handy and out of the way. I keep my unopened stabilizer in a large wine rack. My hubby has been doing a lot of weddings and hasn't had time to post all my pics...but there is a small pic here with the new sewing room behind my 1530....

Thank you! No I do clean between projects though because it bothers me to start out in a messy space...esp when it is going to get worse. It looks terrible right now.

What a wonderful sewing room you have! I have my 8' sewing table with sewing machine, computer desk, card table, and old fashion teachers table for a cutting table, 6 huge and crambed full totes all in an 8x10' room that is the first room that you go through when you come into my home. I wish I could keep my room 1/2 as clean as yours is :) In about a year, though, I am moving to my childhood home and will have a 2 car garage as my sewing/craft room, can't wait!!

We've been painting and reorganizing my sewing room for the past week now and I gave the roller thing a try. My gosh, is that a wonderful idea!!! Mine isn't as pretty as yours, Pam, because it's behind the door, but it's very efficient. We just used a couple 2 x 4's the same height of the door and lined up some metal clips for the dowels and voile! A super-sized roller dispenser; I filled that puppy up, too. And it freed up so much floor space! As soon as my room is totally finished, I'll post the pics.

My new room is so spacious, I can't believe it! We actually had 4 people in there at one time, and no one was touching anyone else! I've died and gone to sewer's heaven! I still have a bit of sorting and putting away to do (I MUST part with some of my 10-17 year old magazines) so I have to go through them. But I do enjoy looking at all of those quilts!

I want to donate my magazines to a good cause, so what would y'all suggest?
