I have not been getting much sewing done - my kids are out of what little school they have (pre- and play-school) and it's kicking my butt! That said, I did a t-shirt reconstruction using the sunburst t-shirt pattern from Stretch & Sew (http://www.etsy.com/view_item_sold_anon.php?listing_id=282379&transaction_id=90513). It was such fun to work with! They have just the right of detail regarding sewing with knits (how many stitches per inch, a great ribbing method), but don't have details you don't need (like a picture of how to sew side seams together!).

I am interested in learning more about Stretch & Sew and seeing if their new patterns (this one's vintage) are as great as the old!

Stretch & Sew was a fabric store that had franchises around the country. When I was first married and living in the mid-west, I attended their classes. Sewing with knits wasn't necessarily taught in home ec classes at the time, so learning how to deal with knits was quite new. The store also offered their line of knits which were very nice (and I thought a bit pricey - but then again I was first married on a strict budget and only allowed my husband one box of Captain Crunch cereal a week).

The classroom demonstrations went over all the techniques that weren't necessarily shown in the instructions, and I think there were also books giving instructions and details of the classroom demonstrations.

The big thing I remember was making up your own pattern from your measurements with do-sew (a lightweight interfacing that they sold) from the master pattern they sold.

You won't find any instructions regarding serging the edges because you need to remember this was pre-surger days. I don't know if the patterns are still produced? I'll have to look around to see if I have any left or the book - I remember it had a pink soft cover (as I did a major purge of old patterns and old sewing and quilting books.)

Wow.....Stretch & Sew - that sure brings back the memories of 1975

ps.....I also made a ton of T-shirts and sweats for my little ones with their patterns. My SIL made then and then fabric painted (pre-embroidery machine days) the front with characters.....I have some of the cutest pictures of my kids in them. sigh.........

I have been on look-out for their "manual" or instruction book. I heard rumor it was at our local Goodwill but when I went there, alas, it was gone.

I checked on www.half.com and they have some (really cheap ...99 cents) for the 1994 edition by Ann Person. I just typed in Stretch & Sew.
