I am tempted to make 60 placemats for the dining room of the health care facility where I work and play [cf. Serger - favorite projects, pg 2]. I made dark maroon table cloths for the 12 4' diameter tables and 60 golden yellow napkins. What color fabric should I consider using for placemats? I have some dark rose tablecloths I can cut up and maybe serge an edge with yellow. I don't want to use a binding tape since the total edging would be close to 100 ft. Would some other colors be suitable? Maybe a wollystretch thread for the edging? Please let me know your creative suggestions. PS I have only this week to complete them. |

I like the rose with maroon, especially since you already have it. I've only used wooly nylon on the serger once and it was fantastic for my purpose. I think my choice would have to do with cost and how heavy the fabric is. I don't think it would work as well on a light weight fabric and it is considerably more expensive than regular serger thread, I think. Also, your place mats are going to be washed often, probably in hot water. I don't know if the wooly nylon can stand up to that or not but I'm sure someone else here can answer that question. Can you use a metalic thread in gold on the edge with the rose material?? I dont have a surger so I am clueless as to what can be used with them. I think that would be soooo pretty and set off the maroon and the gold napkins!! Theres my thoughts for the day, now I must get a nap in and recharge! Stephi

Thanks for the sugestions so far. These table placemats will be used only for special occasions, maybe 6 times a year - so heavy wear and laundering will not be a major concern. Since the rose cloth is substantial and has no stretch, would I use the metalic (or other trim) thread in the lower looper or as a decorative thread fed through the presser foot? Maybe I should move this thread to the serger forum - but I don't know how. |

I'm no serger expert but I would think it would be beautiful in the looper. Dorothy |

I think the metallic sounds pretty, but I also have some doubts about how it would sew.. I would test first to see if it works without breaking every few feet.. And also test in needle and in loopers separately, so if one or the other causes a problem, you will know which caused it..
