Hello to all, I am putting an invisible zipper on something. I can get the zipper on just fine. This is the process I'm using: 1: Both sides of garment back are not sewn together. 2: Open Zipper and sew on each side of garment on right side of fabric. 3: Close zipper finish seam all the way down garment. Number three is where I loose it. The zipper creates this little bump under my presser foot. When the seam is finished all the way down the garment, turn it over and some of the bottom of the zipper shows. I closed the zipper to finish the seam!!! My results are terrible at the bottom of the zipper. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Thanks Yvette[SIZE=4] |

Yvette are you using a special foot? You need to use a foot that has a groove that the zipper coil will fit into so it can unroll from the zipper tape, you can buy a universal foot at most sewing stores that will adapt a regular foot (unless you have a bernina), I use my manual button hole foot, works fine for me, flip your presser feet over and have a peek at the bottom, you need about a 2-3mm wide groove. If you don't have this you can't sew close enough to the zipper so it will pull your fabric together as it rolls inward to become "invisible".

Hi Yvette. I just put in an invisable zipper last week and had one heck of a time. Finally got it right after ripping it out 3 times! You must use the little plastic foot as mommydionne said. It usually is for sale right above the zippers. Anyway, be very sure to iron the coil on each side of the zipper flat as they say in the package. After all the trouble I had, I would suggest sewing it in first with a basting stitch, check to see if it is alright, and then stitch again in a small stitch. Hope this helps. Molly |

Do not sewn all the way to the bottom of the zipper. Stop approx. 1" from the bottom , better yet stop at the pull of the zipper (which should be in the open position anyway) then sew up your seam on the 5/8's seam allowance from the bottom of the garment up to the zipper. When you get to the bottom of where the zipper is just flip that 1" up out of the way and continue sewing up as far as your foot will get into without shifting the material. Press your seam open and than hand tack the 1" flap of the zipper to the seam allowance. When you turn to the right side your zipper should blend right into the sewn seam, if not check to make sure that the zipper teeth are on the same stitching line of your seam. |

If you do not use a zipper foot the recommended length is 2 inches longer than the opening.

I usually need to switch to a regular zipper foot to get that botton-of-the-zipper seam part. There are alternatives. Some stitch up the seam like they're putting in a regular zipper, then line the coil up as close to the seam as possible, and stitch the invisible zip in. I've tried this, and it works okay. I don't have an invisible zipper foot, anyway, so I'm always looking for alternative methods. Getting the zipper two inches longer than the opening is best, as it enables you to get the zip out of the way, and allows for space when you get to the bottom edge. You can easily stitch all the way to the bottom of the opening, where you need to. |
