I need to buy a new iron. But, I want to get the right one for lots of pressing. I am tired of having to hold the iron on the fabric for two days to press a seam or turn up a narrow hem. Can anyone recommend a great iron for me?

I have a little tiny Rowenta. I loved it and used it all the time. Then it quit making steam, so I put it in a basket and forgot about it.
Then my big iron -- which I hated -- hit the floor especially hard and really broke with pieces all over.
I got out the Rowenta, just til I could get to the store for a new iron, and tried the steam. After one or two good vinegary blasts it has been working fine. It is so small and light that it is like a magic wand. But it works as well as a big heavy iron.

When I have a problem with something that won't hold a crease I hit it with steam and put my marble book ends on it. I do that even when I have heavier irons. Some times I go all the way up a seam or around the hem one book end then the next all the way around.

I go through so many irons I refuse to pay a lot for them. I figure if they last a year I'm doing good. I'm hard on them. So is my floor.
I read somewhere the biggest reason for irons failing is hitting the floor, so I must not be the only one.

I think it's good to look for one that will offer steam at any heat setting.

Dorothy--I agree that Rowenta is a great iron! I don't have one but my mother does and it's great! I have a Black and Decker that I am getting close to needing to replace b/c it's been dropped a couple of times..other than that it's worked fine (but not as well as the Rowenta)..Julie

I've had a lot of inexpensive irons that were great. What I like about this one is that it is so small.
And it came with the best lint remover I have ever used.
