Here are the little sew in magnets I bought, and now I'm supposed to sew these into the purse I am making, but the ones in the pattern look like they get sewn on the top of the fabric, like a snap. These have no instructions and I am at a loss, how do I put them in? I don't have a hole made for them to poke through - what do I do?

I have never seen those. Where did you get them?

I don't know but maybe they could be sewn in like the magnets on the bottom of shower curtains. You could do a circle of fabric over them and sew around the circle. Like the center of a dresden plate quilt block? Just an idea.

I haven't used those before but I think Judy's idea is a good one....you could place it behind the lining, add a piece of fabric over the magnet and sew around to keep it in place, that way the stitching around the magnet won't show on the outside.

I personally would make a pouch and put it between the linning and outside. I would then sew it into a seam. Wouldnt have to worry about comming out as much if a kid got a hold of it.

I could only find those when I was looking for a latch to make a tote with. The lady at joannes said you make a small pocket and sew it inder the lining of the purse before you do the final stitching. Just make sure you have the opposites towards eachother or you will never get it closed, LOL!!!

Yup Stephi, you got it right. I finally found them on a website and they go between the lining and the fabric. I got them at Fabricana here in Coquitlam, didn't realize what they were like until I got them out of the package. They worked all right, but with the fabric in between the magnets, you don't get as tight a grip as you do with them just against each other. And I am only using quilting cotton, so they won't work very well with a heavier fabric. Now I will be on the lookout for different ones. I've seen some different kinds on the web, but would like to see what I can find locally first.

I have been told that magnets sewn into handbags can erase credit cards, etc. Here in Oklahoma the new driver's license is scanable as it has your fingerprints on it. Of course, DH would probably be delighted if my ATM card and my credit card did get erased. :nah: That's why I have refrained from putting the closing magnets into any of the purses I've made.

Patsy,
I've had several bags with magnets with no problem. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but not easily.

Thanks Dorothy. I've never tried it but maybe I will in the next handbag I make.

That's a good point about magnets in purses. I am making Placemat purses and want a closure - any other suggestions (besides velcro)?
