Hi,
Since I don't have an embroidery machine.......yet :dave: .......I would like to add an fabric applique to a dress. When you outline it with the thread using an zig zag stitch.. do you use regular sewing thread or do you use something else better? Thanks for any info.

You can use a variety of threads. The rayon embroidery thread is beautiful and has a lot of shine to it. It cannot be bleached and isn't by nature quite as strong as the polyester embroidery threads. The poly threads are my favorite for most embroidery because they are stronger. The shine varies from brand to brand but can almost equal that of rayon. The machine embroidery threads are a little different weight from regular threads. You can always use your regular machine thread. It doesn't have the shine of the embroidery threads but it perfectly acceptable.

You use the zig zag stitch and narrow the stitch length to make it more solid. There are fusible webbing products that I highly recommend because you iron them onto your applique, then cut the shape and iron it in place. That way you are not fighting to keep the little areas in place while you sew and you don't have to worry about placement or creep. When you get to the area of the corners you have a couple of options. You can either do a block turn where you go to the end of the item, then start on the other side giving an overlap, or you can gradually dial down your stitch width to the corner. In that case you just dial it back up after you turn making a mitered corner.

For a bit of added texture, sometimes backing the applique with iron on interfacing helps. It depends on the look you want.
