Well........ It's got a couple hundred stitches built into it, including, I think, 3 alphabets. So far, I've learned how to do a bunch of ordinary stitches, including learning how to do a blind hem stitch for the first time, that was very cool. We practiced sewing with knits, and it did a wonderful job. And I even sewed on tricot for one of the stitches. What I've really loved is that despite switching around to all sorts of different kinds of fabrics, I haven't needed to change the tension, it always stays the same. Which is incredibly cool. The QE is the quilting edition, so it came with a few extra functions, it has the Bernina Stitch Regulator, which is wonderful for doing freeform stitching. I have never managed to do that where it came out looking nice, and now I could conceivably do so. It also is supposed to of come with a 1/4" foot, but I have noticed it yet (mainly because it came in and then I've had 20 million other things going on and I haven't been able to work on it ). But, next week, nothing is planned so I'm going to play with it a whole bunch! This is the last week of classes where we learn how to do practical stitches, and then we start getting into the decorative stitches. I really can't wait to learn about the embroidery unit. Since that's an added feature, my embroidery screen is actually my computer screen, which I think is kind of amusing. But, I'm so excited by this! Ticia |

My old 1530 is probably your machines gggg...(who knows)...grandmother. It has been an absolutely WONDERFUL machine. If I were to replace it I'd probably look at that or something in the 600 series. I understand the quality of the embroidery is quite close to the 200...and it does a marvelous job. I can spot embroidery by Bernina in a room full of other brands...it just looks so much cleaner. Of course, what I like about it may not be what someone else is looking for... My machine is a sewing dynamo! While sewing professionally, I logged thousands of hours of sewing time on the machine. It has never even had a minor repair in all these years (bought new in 1992). I hope that you have as many hours of happy stitching as I have...but take better care of it...I had mine cleaned (professionally) for the first time in 2004!

WOW, I am excited for you. You should never have to adjust your tension! If you experiment with threads in your bobbin, you can always purchase another bobbin case just for threads where you do want to adjust the tension. I've sewn with a Bernina since 1983, and when my 1230 wants to retire (ie: it won't sew another stitch and begs me to go to sewing heaven) I will get a 440 QE with the BSR. Until then, have lots of fun learning about your new machine. Patty

Yeah, that's what they were saying during the lessons, to get a different bobbin holder if you play with the tension, so it's adjusted for the other one. Makes total sense to me. Ticia |

Ticia, I'm soooo jealous, it's a fab machine (test drove one once, sigh...) I love my Bernina 160, get the black case bobbin, it's worth it!!

I probably will, whenever I feel brave enough to try bobbin work. Amusingly enough my dealer recommended just getting a normal bobbin and writing on it with Sharpy or nail polish to make it different (apparently the price for the black case bobbin is $10 more). Ticia |

I also own the Bernina 440E and embroidery module and I really like it. So far I have mostly done embroidery. I also like all the decorative stitches and the ability to use the alphabets. Pat |

There is a mega hoop auto split embroidery patch coming for all the Artista models coming out pretty soon...stay in touch with your local dealer!!!!! I think it will be a free upgrade (except for the hoop).

I've just heard great news! The mega hoop update for your machine is said to be on www.berninaUSA.com I have not looked but it should be under the second tab where it says something about downloads (I think). It will certainly be worth checking out!

I'll have to do that. In our classes this week we just learned how to use the ruffler and gathering foot. I bought the gathering foot, but couldn't quite afford for myself the ruffler..... But, it's so much fun. Ticia |
