My grandkids will all be back in school in about three weeks. I am dreading it. With my oldest grandson, I will have to go to the school one week before it opens and speak with the principal about his challenges.

I have to remind them all that there are tips and modifications in his cumulative file. Homework is a huge issue as well as socialization and what to do in the case of a meltdown.

All of my grandkids need this extra preparation. School is a huge hurdle for them and new teachers can be interesting. Some are more flexible than others. Who else has to make sure the school is prepared and ready for kids with challenges.

Me, but from the other end! Sometimes those of us who are the actual people working with the kids are the ones who need the information and it doesn't get down to us.

I had one SENCO who just gave me a lad to look after and no information on how to handle him. He was off the wall ADHD and no medication and it was my first experience of working with special needs. At the end of the day I wanted to go home, curl up ina ball and cry as I could do nothing right. That was entirely my managers fault as I had no training whatever - she was acting out of a grievance as the Head had appointed me without consulting her. I made it to the next day when the Head of English came into the staffroom and said "that was tough - he is a pratt." not politically correct but made me feel better.

I am going in to school 2 days early to try and pick up on the latest gen and get things prepared.

I found out that the teachers in the high school only look at the file if they have to. Usually because of disipline problems. With my son I sent a note to the teacher with his full report in it. This told what rights he had & what rights the teacher had in dealing with his special needs. The teachers told me they would not have known about it if I hadn't sent it (my son was/is Add without the H). He basically just needed a push to get him going. I am so glad he graduated in June. Now I only have 1 to deal with & she is in honors/pre International Baclaurette(sp? she's in honors not me.)
I feel for you Mary but remember what Magot said a lot of times teachers don't get the info if a parent doesn't tell them.

I know, that's why I spend time every year letting them know what they have in store. Last year I started the first day of school but nothing much happened until the first parent-teacher interview when I got a little testy. Don' cha know next morning, they found his file. My, my what a coincidence. :whacky:

If it is going to affect lunch, library, music etc. Let those people know also. With the privacy thing going on the scholl nurse didn't want to let me, the Lunch Lady know about food allergies, kids with bathroom problems, & bee sting allergies. I finally got her to let me know but I was not allowed to share with the lunch aides taking the kids outside. This yr I am sending a note to the parents to see if they will let me share the info with the people who NEED to know.

Barb, that is daft! When I was Lunch supervisor I and all my lunch aids had access to the medical records of all the kids - we discussed and flagged up the allergies and asthmatics, were aware of the ones with hip problems which meant they couldn't queue - knew who our blind and deaf kids were, let alone the ones with broken arms who couldn't carry trays. We are expected to ask with the same discretion as all other members of staff - it is a trust issue. For crying out loud we were under instructions to make sure our anorexics ate something - how can you do that if you are not allowed to know who they are! We were all trained in child protection and school policy issues so why not us as real members of staff instead of warm bodies?

I agree!! The last school where I was working I knew about all of the kids even when I was a volunteer. If I was alone with a group the nurse & principal thought I needed to know about them. The new school I think the nurse just wants control but she was only at the school 1 day a week & of course nothing major happened when she was there. I am going to bring the problem up at our training on 8/22. They are changing the lunch program to save $ so we have to go all day & learn our job all over again.

I understand what your going thru Mary. We are already in school and we always go the week before, especially if we're getting a new teacher. Jeff does have a new teacher this year so we went to meet her. On the 3rd day of school he had an attack involving his heart and had the teacher in fits. I was surprised, she's worked with more medically fragile children than mine. I have a bus load of children labeled ED, LD and then of course the mental and physically challenged ones, like Jeff. Already there's been write ups for some of their behavior. I've asked that they be removed asap and put on another bus. My true mentally and physically challenged children do not need to be around behavior problems we see from those children. The route is 2 hours long and that's too long for them to sit confined. I'm sure it will take a while to redistribute them, it's sad because out of 5 boys, I really see them all as good boys when I look into their eyes, except for one. I think he's probably a good boy but has buried himself very deep within. Most are being raised by grandparents or aunts, and drughead parents. The rule on my bus is that my self and my aide maintain a positive loving attitude when dealing with all the children even in a negative situation. I know there's good in them....................hmmmm, maybe I'll keep them on there after all and see if they'll blossom with a bit of love. I can see the potential in them. I'm off now to pick each one of the darlings up and wish them a good day. You ladies have a great day also. Gena in Tx,whose ac on her bus is not too cool in 106 degree temps.

I understand too Mary. I've had those meetings every year since my son started school. In elementary school, the teachers and principal were all willing to take time to learn about his problems. By middle school it was harder, and now in high school most of them don't give a rip and expect him to do as well as most of the other kids. When I talked to his principal about his T.S. and ADHD, he said he'd never noticed any problem and never had a proablem reported about him except an incident with arguing with a substitute teacher. He did have one teacher last year that took more interest in him and always came to me when he got behind on his work BEFORE report cards came out.
Thank God this is his last year! (I hope) He seems more excited this year, so I hope he'll really try to keep his grades up. He's on the scholar's bowl team and is very smart. He's just never been able to focus on written work. I gave up on having his work modified years ago.

In our lunchroom we're notified each year of the kids on special diets, kids with food allergies, ect. We always have several kids that we have to modify lunches for.

I feel for you Gena. It's much too hot in the south to go back to school in August. There's a group here in our state trying get legislation that schools won't start back so early here. I've read of groups in surrounding states trying the same thing. I've never understood why they started going back this early here. When I was a kid we always started back the day after Labor day. There would be alot of money saved for the school systems on power bills alone if we waited until after Labor day when the temperature is cooler.

Our schools will start later next year. It will mean less breaks but that's ok. The children are exhausted when they get off the bus, mainly the ones that ride the whole 2 hours.
