As far as pattern drafting goes, I've often wanted to buy pattern-drafting software so that I could make something that fits ME perfectly (which isn't easy at 6'3" and 220lbs!). Instead of buying software, I found a lady who gave lessons in pattern drafting. It was the best thing I've ever done for myself. It gave me a better understanding of how the pattern relates to my body, AND which adjustments were necessary if something was "out of whack". So far I have patterns (my very OWN patterns) for a skirt, a dress with sleeves, and a sleeveless dress which I drafted myself (so I totally understand the measurements required). Next project: a pants pattern, and a jacket pattern. Then I'll be happy, happy, happy! Bev

Hi Bev and welcome to Sew Whats New. Congratulations on learning to draft your own patterns. That is quite an accomplishment. I have been sewing forever and have no idea how to draft my own.

How wonderful for you! I can alter patterns but have yet to try drafting my own. I have been paying very close attention to pattern pieces and clothing and where darts go and how things fit, so I think I have some general notions of how it all works, but I haven't ever tried anything. I wish there was someone around here who could teach pattern drafting! |

I too am noticing and measuring a lot of my clothing. I have started with a very plain, simple blouse to wear. Then, I add details and change shapes. I'm happy doing this, but sometimes I lay awake at night thinking up new ideas. Drives hubby crazy. LOL.

I have yet to use a pattern, I kind of just make my own out of paperbags, but I would love to learn the basics. I have all these ideas and am not sure exactly what should happen first and where I can improve the design. I will have to look into the pattern classes around here. No chance you are from MN?? |
