My father is in the uniform business. Actually he's a truck driver FOR a uniform business. But he recently gave me a patch that was mandatory on their personal uniforms. It is a flag like this -> :USA:

Well I want to sew it onto the right sleeve of my leather jacket, but I'm not sure how to sew on to leather, or if there are any special things I should know. Also I've never sewn a patch before. Or... much for that matter.

I wouldn't do it normally, but its not like anyone in my family sews.

Any ideas?

I did read that you shouldn't use cotton fiber thread with leather though. And something about needle size but I'm not sure...

This is kind of a specialty item. You need a leather needle which is shaped like a triangle at the bottom to help pierce the jacket. You'll need to lengthen the stitch. You can not allow yourself to make a mistake on leather.

Most people have a lot of trouble sewing patches on fabric. I do a lot of sewing but when it comes to sewing on a leather jacket that has already been constructed? I'd take it to a dry cleaners that does repairs and cleans leather jackets. Nothing scares me more than touching a $200-300 (or more) LEATHER jacket...because you just can't take it back.

How about the dweeb answer - glue it on. Though I don't like the idea of ruining leather either - got a cobbler nearby?

First of all, if the patch is as you have shown it, it must be sewn on the left sleeve to be properly displayed. The blue area must be toward the front of your body. I know this seems strange, ( it looks backwards) but you must display the flag the way it would fly, as if it were in the wind. I do many military patches, and they are all sewn on the left sleeve. Sewing on leather should not be so intimidating. Yes, the cow is dead and will not heal if you make a mistake, but if you remember to lengthen your stitches (if they are too close together it is like a perforated piece of paper, and will tear) and take your time, it is not that difficult. Of course, I am used to sewing with commercial machines. If you are using a home machine, I definitely suggest a leather needle and a walking foot, if your machine will accept one. If you are not used to easing your layers together, a walking foot will definitely help.

What about by hand? That was what I was planning. I don't know if we have a machine. I think we may somewhere but I haven't the faintest how to use it.

On stitch length, the patch is 3.25 inches in length, 2 inches in ... the other length. (I guess width would be 1/8 to 1/16 an inch). So what would you say the gap between each stitch should be?

And when you say stitch, just standard in-and-out stitchin' ?

PS Maybe I should practice on a cow that will heal itself first...
