Hi, I'm new to the forum and absolutely love the website! It's fantastic! I'm from dublin, Ireland and although we have a couple of fabric shops, they can be quite expensive and the range wouldn't be the greatest. I'm going to New York for two weeks in October (i'm so excited, i've never been to America before!) and i was wondering if anyone would know of any good fabric shops i could visit while i'm there? any suggestions i'd really appreciate. Thanks a mil! There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate." -Charles Dickens

You can do a google search of fabric stores, new york city and a directory http://www.nyc.com/shop/Fabric.25181000/all_nyc_shop.aspx comes up. I like Poli Fabrics and I'm going to check out Mood Fabrics (only because I want to see what the store is like from Project Runway. One thing that I found different in NYC rather than fabric stores elsewhere is that the fabric comes on the roll rather than on the bolt. Maybe overseas that is what you are already accustomed to seeing. Have fun and enjoy your visit to NY. Patty

Thank you, i'll check that out now! We have both rolls and bolts, usually the bridal fabric comes on rolls and the casual fashion fabric comes on bolts. There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate." -Charles Dickens

I'd think you'd want to check out the garment district. I don't remember the streets, exactly, but if you get to Times Square someone -- a cop probably -- can direct you. Then there are blocks of great little shops. You will know you are there when you see the statues. One is a big button! It is like heaven. Here is a tip -- the shop owners are willing to bargain over prices and they like cash rather than credit cards -- they cheat a little on taxes I would suppose. Some shops are closed on Saturday and some on Sundays for religious reasons. Dorothy |

See if you can access this thread on the Threads magazine website (http://forums.taunton.com/tp-gatherings/messages/?start=Start+Reading+%3E%3E) You might have to sign in to read it. I'm not sure how that wrks. But the topic has come up before, and it is discussed in depth on that page. I hope you have a really fun time.

OK, I see it doesn't work that way. But if you go to "general sewing info" on the menu at the left of that page, and then open it up and scroll down, you'll find the thread, "NY Garment District." Now you have your work cut out for you!
