Is it necessary?? I have searched the little manual I got with the machine and there is no where that it mentions any cleaning or oiling.

If it's a new machine (made within the last 15 yrs) YOU don't oil it. When you take it in for service the repair person does it. There are NO oil holes in the new machines. Just make sure you blow (with canned air) or suck out all the lint under the bobbin case/race and keep the outside wiped down with a soft cloth ( no water, no spray cleaner).

Chrys is right that your machine should not need oiling if you are having it serviced regularly. Just keep the lint out of it. Use canned air only if you do take it in for service regularly. Canned air blows a lot of the lint back into the machine and over time it can build up pretty bad. With regular servicings this gets removed. I am speaking only of your Deco. Your 1471 like most machines should have a drop of oil on the hook periodically. Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Thanks both of you. I am really good at oiling the 1471 and keeping the lint out of both, after having a service man sweetly reprimand me when I did take the 1471 in for servicing and it was packed with lint! No wonder it didn't want to sew! I'm having a lot of problems with the Deco500, mostly with the thread shredding, and am getting really frustrated with it.
