Hello everybody! My name is Katie and I am a WAHM of 2 kiddos, ages 5 and 7. I am interested in doing some of the boutique overalls. Anybody know where I can get instructions without purchasing on Ebay, etc.? I would love to make some "girlie" ones for my DD, as well as some "boyish" ones for my DS (who is ALL boy and too old for cutsie stuff). Any help would be appreciated! Would also LOVE to see pictures of what you other ladies might have done. I am new to sewing and finding inspiration everywhere I look!

Thanks so much!
Katie

Hi Katie, Can't help you with your question other than to suggest you google it but I'm sure someone will be along. Just wanted to welcome you to boards-when you get those overalls finished be sure to share a photo with us.

If you can give us an idea of what you think "boutique" overalls look like, we could probably help you. I would think pastel colors, loads of eyelet trim, ribbon and some embroidery.

I think the same thing as Mary, so I'm curious what "boy botique overalls" look like.

As far as pictures, I would look through the different threads, almost all of them have at least one picture included. And I can practically guarantee any thread entitled something like "I'm Finished!" or "I'm So Proud," and all variations there forth will have pictures.

Hi all! Thanks for your speedy responses! I guess I should have been more specific about what I am looking for. For DD, I am looking for instructions to make something like these:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=boutique+overall+instructions&category0=

However, I am cheap and was hoping somebody knew where I could find basically the same instructions for free.

I have no idea what the boy overalls might look like. I was really fishing for ideas, as I have an old pair of overalls to fit my son that I wanted to do something with, but not make them look "sissified" (for lack of a better term). I have a couple of firetruck patches (DH is a fireman) that I thought about putting down at the ankle on 1 side or something, but I have no idea how to attach those???

Whatever I end up doing, I will be sure to post pictures. I am so excited to have found this site!!!

Thanks!
Katie

They are sooooooo cute. Basic overalls with some ruffles attached in kid prints and some embroidered motifs.

Why not find your basic pattern (on sale of course) and go from there. I love the ruffles on the bottom of the legs. These are just fabric strips gathered to the leg bottom.

Boy boutique overalls would be made from masculine denim with detailing on the pockets. Look at a man's overall and see what they have. I used to add a loop on the side for my son when he was small to look like Dad's. It was to carry a hammer but for little boys, just a masculine design detail. Plaid shirts look cute too.

I fell in love with them too! I am going to start with purchased/used overalls and embellish them. Once I master my sewing machine a little better, I would love to try my hand at actually making the WHOLE thing from scratch. I am going to have to go shopping and see what kind of goodies I can come up with. I will absolutely post what I managed to put together, considering it is presentable... LOL!

Thanks for your input, Mary. I do have a question about thread notifications. I am not receiving any emails to alert me to responses. I subscribed to this thread (requesting instant notification) and also to the other thread I posted to, but no emails regarding either yet??

Thanks!

These boards are going to be upgraded very soon. I wouldn't worry about it until after that takes place. I will let everyone know when this happens.

I have made several boutique overalls for gifts and several for my 3 y/o son. I have made a Thomas the tank engine, 50's poodle juke box, western, alien/space, farm etc. I am a teacher, so I have patterns at my disposal, like Clip Art. You can also use character fabric...cut out the character, iron fusible interfacing to that and then trace face down on wonder under and then iron that to the back on the interfacing...character, interfacing, wonder under, iron, are the steps. You have to cut each time Peel off the back of the wonder under and iron to your overalls. Then satin stitch or zig zag around the character. Most cover the bib with a coordinating fabric and then put the characters on top of that. Applique is tedious, time consuimg work, but it looks great in the end. You do have to re-iron after every washing, especially if it is a big character, because it will wrinkle. If you are good at drawing, you can make your own patterns, you just draw them on the wonder under piece by piece, cut them out, then iron the interfacing(cut that out) and then to the fabric(cutting that out). I hope this has helped! Felicia

I have made a ton of appliqued (satin stitch) overalls over the years. Here is some examples that I have done.

http://www.practiceboard.com/?4394579

I would be happy to help you any way I can put your own together. I use Old Navy denim overalls usually. Take off the pocket on the bib and the belt loops. Then get out the seam ripper and open up the inseam of the overalls.I cover the bib with a coordinating fabric. If you use a light color remember to line it (you can see I forgot on the Raggedy Ann pair). Figure out the design you want. If you can't draw Color book pages are great place to start. You can even print off ones online. I then pick out the fabrics I want to use and iron on wonderunder (some people like to use heat n bond lite or steam a seam) Make sure that you cut out your pieces a little bigber on the inside of the design so you can overlap them slightly. I then lay out my pieces where I want them and iron them on. Next I use the satin stitch on my machine (Or you can use a really close together zigzag stitch) and go around the design in thread that matches (or as close as you can). Believe it or not the faster you sew the smoother the lines specially around the circles and curves. I like to hand embroider little accents - like the faces, whiskers etc. When you have the design sewn down then sew up the inseam. Next decide what kind of ruffles you want. On a 2T you can usually get two ruffles out of a 44" fabric. For bigger overas if may take more. I usually measure around the leg open and make my ruffle into a circle the same length. Then pin the ruffle to the hem right sides together, aligning seams. Then stitch on, turn under and topstitch.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions :)

I've only made one pair of overalls. I did it when I first learned to applique and make ruffles. It's not that great, but I thought I'd share.

I made them in my dh's favorite Nascar driver's colors and number. I could never find cute girly stuff in the Nascar clothes for kids. I gave it to dd at Christmas as a surprise for my dh too. He loved it!

Oh... WOW!!!! What fabulous work, ma24qtz! Exactly what I was interested in. Your instructions seem easy enough; although, with my limited sewing skills, not sure how successful I will be. Along with the instructions from kdgteacher, I should be able to at least attempt to put something together.

I have a pair of Old Navy overalls waiting to work on for my son. I have some hunter's camo that would be so neat on the bib..... My mind is whirling with ideas now. Thank you SO much to everybody who shared!!! It will take me a while, but as soon as I complete my first pair, you ladies will be the first to see!

Thanks!

I have done a few pair of these and they are soooooooo fun to create. One of my neighbors boutgh a pair somewhere online and said can you do anything like this and a new obsession was born! However mine are NOWHERE near as cute as MA24QTZ's. Those (and the models) are just precious!!

I was looking at one of yours and noticed you turned the top into a halter type top. Where did you cut off the back? And did you just make a casing out of the existing denim and then put elastic in? Thanks - Susan

I just cut off the back add fabric with a casing for elastic and sew it down to the front. you don't need the snaps because of the elastic.

I have been making them for 4 years now - not anything special just lots and lots of practice. I still applique a ton but more tees and jean sets. I also have been selling customs on Ebay for quite a number of years.

Hi there!! I've been wanting to make these for my daughter and son for awhile and I am so thankful that some women have put their instructions on here.

Unfortunatly I am very new to sewing (although I am a very crafty person) and I was just wondering if anyone wouldn't mind explaining the steps a bit more. I am not too sure what wonder under is or what it does ... Anyways, I apperiate any help!!

Thanks so much!!

Think of Wonder Under as a type of glue. You can buy it in prepackaged sets or by the yard, it's usually about 2 feet wide. It has 2 sides to it. One side is slightly sticky and the other side is paper that peels away.
You will iron the sticky side to the wrong side of your fabric (the side that doesn't look pretty). You can then cut out your fabric into whatever shapes you want for the design.
The reason you iron it on (glue it on) before you cut it out, is this helps keep the fabric from fraying on you, and provides a little extra stability. So when I'm going to use it, I will trace the picture I want and will cut a piece of Wonder Under slightly larger than what I will eventually need.
After the fabric has cooled sufficiently you would then carefully peel off the paper backing. You need to check and make sure that you haven't peeled off the glue. You'll be able to tell because your fabric will feel different and will have a slight sheen to it where you ironed the Wonder Under on.
Now, you place your wonderful new picture on the outfit you're wanting to embellish, and then you iron it down.
There are two types of Wonder Under, one is lighter and you will need to sew that down, but you can use it with your sewing machine. There's a heavier brand that claims you don't need to sew it down, but if you try and sew with it, you will gum up your sewing machine and get lots of gunk on your needle, thread breaking, and all sorts of other problems like that. I learned this the hard way.

Hopefully, this gave you a pretty conclusive explanation of what you need to do.

Wow! That was great!!! Thanks so much for taking the time out to write that out for me! Now, I have one more question ... would someone mind explaining how to make the overalls into a halter ... I really tried picturing this in my head and I even was looking at a pair of overalls but couldn't get it. Thanks so much for you gals explaining this to me!!
