I made a tooth-fairy pillow for my neice and after turning it inside out and stuffing it, I couldn't figure out how to close up the hole! I ended up doing this very ghetto and gave it to a co-worker as a chew-toy (since it was my first attempt.)

I would now like to make a nicer-looking pillow (workong on those curves!) as well as some dog chrew toys (bought some squeakers at a pet store). What is the best stitch to use when closing these stuffies? Should this be done by hand or machine?

Thanks!

I tend to hand stitch my pillows closed.

The prettiet way is to do it between the folds of the seam allowance by hand. The stitches need to be tiny.

Is there a certain type of stitch I should do by hand? I know there are names for different stitches in embroidery, should I look something up for the type of sewing stitch to use for closing these projects up?

I use a ladder stitch, which is almost invisible and holds the fabric together nicely. First sew a row of stitching at your seam allowance, so it's easy to see where to sew the closure together.

Shady and I have had this discussion some time ago. What she calls a ladder stitch is the same as the slip stitch as I was taught it (at least it seems to be.) This is a very clean closure.

It was called the invisible slip stitch when I learned it years ago.. I still use it because it is truly invisible and I use a double strand of thread for strength also.. :bg: :bg:
