I was checking out the clearance rack at Joann's today, as all the clearance fabrics were 50% off and I'm a student on a budget, and I realized that I have no idea how to pick out a print that will look nice as an article of clothing. I picked out a couple of floral prints for skirts, mostly because I already have skirts with similar prints that look good on me. But when it comes to tops especially, I'm kind of at a loss. They have some prints that are obviously weird, but some that might look nice in the right kind of top. But would it look good on me? The tops I own tend to be solid colors and nothing too bright. I'm interested in branching out a bit, but I don't want to look too crazy. :re: I know it probably depends a lot on personal style, but do you guys have any rules that you follow when picking out prints?

As a person of size, I too tend to go to the solids, but I am a person who loves color! I have started to venture into the prints by using tone on tones. I found a beautiful white rayon type that has shiny white flowers on it that I made a long-sleeve button front blouse from and I think it looks really nice. I also found a couple of cottons for short sleeve button fronts that are tone on tone. The hard part wasn't so much choosing the prints as choosing the colors. I'm not real sure what colors are good on me, I've had a couple of people tell me that jewel tones are good, one of those was my 16 yr old dd! She said for me to stay away from pastels! If you are a little afraid of prints, try the tone-on-tones to start with and take it a step at a time!

I just made a maternity top for dd#2 that is lime green with purple polkadots!
It looks fantastic on her. The print is wild but the shirt is very simple, and since it is rimmed in purple it is "framed". Summer top with 1 1/2"
straps, bandau (sp) top with a 1/2 circle skirt empire style.
She wasn't to sure about it until she tried it on, it screamed her name.
Just make sure the background fabric is "your color" or add a solid fabric to it at the collar area that is "your color" and is in the design. You could really have load of fun!

If you want some thing that is "you" why not try something you like?
That is the standard I use.
Of course, I'm not what most consider conservative.
But I love my clothes!!
