I'm making the cape for a DN, a costume and I don't want to line it. Do I need to make a facing down the front of both sides? I'm going to use a botton for closure instead of the suggested frog. I'm afraid the fabric won't hold the botton if there's no facing. Also, the fabric is a little stretchy, if I need an interfacing for the front, what kind of interfacing should I use? Thank you so much for your help. Jean

I made a cape once...but it was for wearing all the time. I used a stretchy
'peachskin'( fake suede). Make the interfacing for the front. Use an IRON ON facing (pellon..med weight). Not only will it 'finish' the front, it will help keep the buttonhole from sagging and maybe looking bad. ( even if it IS a costume).

Thanks for the response Chris. I thought my 'botton' was a typo until I spelled it that way twice. Good grief ...I used to be able to spell.

So, should the facing and interfacing go down the entire length of the cape on both sides? How wide should I make the facings?

I can't remember the fabric type - it looks somewhat like crushed velvet, but is stretchy and washable and inexpensive, has a sheen to it. Would the iron on interfacing be woven or stretchy?

When I attach the hood I thought I'd do a french seam since I won't have the lining to hide it. Should the finished looking side be on the inside or the outside?

You should only need to interface 2 or 3 inches wide and the whole length. I would also apply the interfacing to your facing pieces and not the velvet as you'll crush it. Use a velvet board of terry towel on your ironing board.
If you're going to finish the hood with French seams, it really depends on what you think would look better. I would suggest stitching them down like flat felled seams and it would be appropriate for either side. If you're going to leave them loose as French seams often are, do that on the wrong side and it'll give you a nice piping effect. Or you can do a binding finish with either a self fabric or a constrasting one just for a little flair.
Hope this helps,
Katherine

Is the material your using crushed panne? It feels like velvet, but looks crushed and very stretchy, comes in all kinds of colors? What pattern are you using?

That's it. I have 2 patterns and haven't decided which one to use:

either Butterick 4030 or McCall's P438

I used a 2" wide length of fusible interfacing on the self faced front of the cape. The penne so stretchy, it puckered all the way down the front because the interfacing didn't 'give'. So I removed all but the very top of the interfacing, where the closures go. I decided against buttons, and used a frog. I have the cape hanging now, because it seems to stretch out more every day. I'm not going to tack the self facing to the cape. It's sewn at the top where the frog is and the serged edges don't show. So except for the hem, cape is done. I think my DN will like it. Thanks for the help on this project! Jean
