I am making a pair of pants for my infant son. I know how to make the pants easy enough. But I'd like to embellish by adding a cuff in a contrasting material. somethng like in this link, scroll down to the "lil wrangler" set. link (http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=bug*n*belle) I don't want to line the pants. I just can't wrap my head around on how to do it. can anyone explain briefly how you'd do it? thank you so much! Wendy

Measure how long you want to make the cuff, add enough for your inside fold, cut a pattern from the bottom of your pants pattern. don't forget to subtract the hem from the leg since you will have a seam in it's place. I could show you better if you were here I am not as good at writing out directions. That is what I did for these baby pants. They don't show up real good but I made a cuff of flannel to match the coat lining. http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/Momofsix2006/Baby%20Shower%20gift/ Barb

ok, sorry to ask some more questions. Once I have it measured and cut out, do I sew it onto the bottom of the pant leg with the right side to the wrong side? KWIM? How did you finish the cuff edge? with just a hem? Sorry, I just really have no idea how to do this LOL! I can do ruffles no problem! Wendy

I'd measure the width I want for the cuff, add the seam allowance and about 1/2 to an inch to turn up, double it and fold it in half length wise. fold one edge under the width of the seam allowance and sew the other edge to the bottom of the pant leg. Grade the seam allowance and cover it with the other side of the cuff. either hand stitch the edge over the seam or stitch in the ditch -- like a waist band -- then turn up the cuff and tack it at the seams. But I could be wrong. I often am. Oh yeah, I'd interface the cuff to add a bit of body. Dorothy |

I sewed the side seams, then sewed it to the bottom of the pants, I serged bottom then turned it up like a hem leaving enough too long to fold back for the cuff. Then you can tack at the side seams to keep the cuff from falling.

You could cut the bottom of the pants off 5/8 of an inch on the hem side of the foldline, sew one side of the interfaced cuff on and then hem the cuff like you would the pant hem, so that your cuff is just an extension of the bottom of the pant. The advantage would be that the pant would look lined. The equasion for that would be 2 times the width of the cuff plus whatever you wanted to turn under for the hem plus one seam allowance and any extra you want for fabric finish (if you want to turn the edge you'd add 1/4 inch). Then depending upon how stiff your cuff fabric is, you may need to tack it at the sides of the pants...or not. Dorothy's application or this application either one would allow you to turn the cuff down if the child got too tall for his (her) pants.
