It's hard to believe it's been one year ago but it has been. I just want to share an article I found about my Canadian friends and what they did for the community after the storm that I lived in before the storm. Thank you so much for being our friends and my community will never forget you guys. :Canada:

http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=5a03871f-c3b4-4ee4-9b60-461759c7df85

I'm so tired of watching the tv today it's so depressing. It's all been hashed over and over again until I'm just ready to forget it and move on. I miss Chalmette but it's the people I miss not the place. And most of the people there that was our community are gone so it's not home anymore. :bluesad: Out of 68000 residents only about 15000 are back there and most are in small travel trailers not in their homes. Some are there just to gut their homes so they can sell them and move somewhere else.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I'm in southeast Florida, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. I was here for Andrew in 1992 and Wilma last year. Yesterday held a lot of irony for us since our schools were closed yesterday and today as we waited for Ernesto. Last year we were closed 2 days as we waited for Katrina to pass us. I think the emotions have finally caught up with me today, I teared up as I read your post. I thank God that Ernesto fizzled out before it got to us and continue to pray that the rest of the hurricane season will be calm. We have people still living in fema trailers, others with blue tarps on their roofs and office buildings with boads in place of windows. I know the devastation we experienced here was not the same as LA but once you've been through a hurricane the memory never goes away and you can relate to what others have been through. Thanks for letting me ramble, I needed to get it out of my system.
Now I need to go take down the shutters and finish the baby dress I was working on yesterday to keep me busy and calm. And tomorrow I'll be back to work for 2 days before the 3 day holiday weekend.

I remember Andrew, we lived in Broward (just N of Ft Laud) then and we stayed with In-Laws through the storm. DH was an a/c tech then and had to do a lot of the repair work in Miami area afterwords, he said it was unreal the damage. DS's SIL had a plant nursery in Homestead and they lost all the plants but their house was spared.
We lived in Port St Lucie in 2004 when Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne's eyes went over our house. Fortunately we lived (still own) in a CBS (concrete block structure) with drop awnings and a low-line roof. Our house is situated so the winds don't hit straight on so that helps a lot too. Both times we only had a little soffit damage, same place both times!, nothing structural. DD's H.S. was hit hard, one of the brick buildings on campus had the roof ROLLED back! They ended up tearing the building down. The rest of the buildings were OK with a broken window here or there.
My brother lives in Broward (NW of Ft. Laud) and he still has blue tarps on his roof from the storms last year. He has a job offer in N.Carolina, but if he can't sell his house soon he will have to give it up and houses aren't selling much down there, especially while still waiting for the roofer!
We moved to N.FL this summer and were hit with the first storm of the year here!, but it was very mild and we were hardly aware when it was passing!
You'd think we'd get the message that maybe we aren't wanted in FL with the storms following us! LOL!

I thought a lot about you yesterday Susie. Like Mary, I turned the tv off early yesterday evening. All of the new stations, Fox, CNN, CNBC, etc., are still playing the blame game a year later and I'm sick of hearing it. Then Fox was in South Florida hyping Ernest like it was also going to be the "storm of the century" and wipe out the entire state of Florida. Are they desparate for news or what???

The news has been depressing, especially 1 year later. Locally, they have been publishing stories of those who relocated to this area, how things have cahnged, whether they would ever go back, etc. Most have indicated that there is noting to go back to; and those who remained or did go back are suffering deep depressions. Not a good situation.

My heart goes out to each & every one of you who have suffered through this.

You were in my thoughts as well, Susie. All day long there were different references to Katrina and the recovery efforts. It is going to take a very long time. We're all glad that you and your family have survived it all and are moving forward. and (((hugs)))

Thanks everyone for the thumbs up. I do wish I could go home but to the home I left on Aug 28th. We were moving here before the storm but at least when I moved here before the storm I could have always visited the people I love in the community I loved but now it's no more. I was really strong after the storm I guess it was shock, but the longer this goes on the heavier my heart gets. Especially now that my childhood home has been torn down and my home and my children's homes are all gone too. Everytime I see our place it makes me not want to go down there anymore. But I guess there is a compelling force driving me there because everytime I get a chance to go to the southshore of the lake I always wind up going down there to see and make myself sadder.

I have to go to the southshore today to bring my DGS to the hospital to get his broke arm checked. I guess I will wind up going to Chalmette afterwards. ((Hugs)) to all of you.

Hang in there Suzie Q. You have many here who love you and do understand what you are feeling.

Patsy, they have always said the Biggest "Drama Queens" are those in the News Media. They live to make things bigger than life!!! Guess they haven't been told that the general public doesn't buy everything they tell us as fact!!!

Susie, was thinking of you yesterday with all the news and all our friends in FL too worrying about the storm. It's definitely depressing.

Having worked for a local tv station at one time I agree, the news is definitely sensationalized and a lot of the frenzy about things is whipped up by the media. I drove me nuts while I was working there-why rehash and rehash the bad-how about sensationalizing some good stuff?

Nobody cares if the general public buys it as fact -- just so long as they buy it! Gotta pay the bills, you know.

I lived in Louisiana, near New Orleans for almost 24 years. My dad and sister still live there and made it through Katrina. They were very fortunate because they were on the west side of the storm and even tho they evacuated for six weeks, all they came home to was the electricity in their apartment being off and losing a refrigerator full of food. They both know how lucky they are.

We caught some of the storm up here in Central Mississippi - a lot of rain and tornados - but again, we didn't suffer anywhere near what the coast did.

I watched the results of Katrina on TV for weeks.......I will say this. Its' one thing to watch it on TV and think of the tragedy that befell so many people. Back in July, we had to travel through Biloxi, MS and then on to Slidell to visit my son. I saw first hand the devastation of that day, even if it was almost a year later...... it really humbled me to see so many picking up and carrying on with life - not giving up.

My oldest daughter was in Biloxi in April with her youth group. They were helping to repair houses for the elderly that had no help. She told me of one house that had not been opened since the storm and how they went in and started cleaning everything out of it. The little girl that lived there managed to have two rubbermaid containers come through - one will dolls, the other with photos and a few clothes. My daughter cried when she came home and thought of so many that lost everything - memories, clothing - their homes.

~sigh~

Hey everyone, Liz how are you losing weight? I'm on Weight Watchers and I lost 16 pounds of the 25 I put on after Katrina. I think that storm did a # on all of us down here emotionally and physically.

St Bernard Parish still looks like it did a year ago with the exception of the boats are out the throughafares and some of the mud is cleaned out the streets and homes. MOst of the houses sit destroyed just like the storm left them with the owners gone for good. The government down there is crippled and blaming everything on each other instead of moving forward they are standing still. Some of the money has been stolen that was to go toward helping the people get back on their feet. In Mississippi they are moving ahead because the politicians aren't scrapping off the top of the federal monies coming in to the area. Can't say the same for Louisiana and St Bernard Parish. It's a sin to think of all the billions of dollars the President sent to the people and it's not getting down to the ones it was intended for................it's so sad. Thank God for people like your daughter who have come to help gut and clean the houses of the elderly. Bless them all. They have really made people down there see people are truly wonderful in times like these. Thank you and thank them.

This seems appropriate in the discussion.

Look Forward to Tomorrow

You can begin immediately to be the person you aspire to be. You don't have to wait. Do not be ruled by yesterday. In fact, change is often easy. The hard part is to maintain that change for the long term.

Hope does spring eternal. If you fall down today, you have tomorrow. If you fall down tomorrow, you still have the day after tomorrow. Keep at it. You will either succeed or end up being the toughest opponent most will ever meet. Everything starts happening right now!

Hey everyone, Liz how are you losing weight?

~insert big ol' sigh here~ Well, I was doing weight watchers, but since moving up here to MS, I haven't found one local, so I'm pretty much doing it on my own - and not succeeding very well, either. Now that the weather is "cooling" off, I am probably going to start walking again.

Liz don't give up. The meetings are very important to stick with if you can but if you can't find a local meeting, join on the internet at www.weightwatchers.com if you can. I need to start walking too. I see a man down the street from me walking several times a day past my house so I guess as time goes on I'll do the same.

Mary that is a good thing "Look forward to tomorrow" I do that all the time myself. Sometimes it gets to me not knowing anyone here close to me but I guess as I start meeting people I will not feel that way anymore. My grandsons are keeping me busy and the granddaughters are too. My son went to court the other day to keep custody of his daughter and the judge ruled in his favor. My youngest son's girlfriend moved back in with him this week I think, next to me and now the baby will be close to me too. That's the one I was so worried about. My other daughter in law is ready to have the new baby in October so that will make 8 grankids for me. I need to get busy making her baby things. It's another girl, Emily Marie, and she makes 6 DGD's and 2 DGS's. Well I better close for now. I'll keep in touch whenever I can. Hugs to all of you.
