I was looking in the Joann's ad for this weekend and say where they had White sewing machines on sale. Does anyone know much about these. I have never had one or know someone that has had one. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know how much this will help you, but I have one that was made about 1950! I bought it for the desk type cabinet for another machine I had and the guy sold me the cabinet with the machine included for $15 about 20 years ago! He said he didn't know if it worked or not, but the cabinet was worth that much, even if it did need refinished. I took it home and cleaned and oiled it replaced the electric cord and it's still running like new! It's cast iron and straight stitch only. It came with attachments (zig-zagger, ruffler, and some other stuff) and the original owner's manual (that's how I know how old it is). If the new ones are as good as this one then go for it!

Kelly --
My mom had one like that. She won it at a Bingo game when it was new. It was older than I am and I remember doing a lot of sewing on it.

Right now it doesn't get used much, except to hold things up, but it's really good for heavy fabrics like denim. I'm considering selling it, even though I know I won't get much for it, or donating it and using it as a tax write-off. If someone kinda local to me wants it, you're welcome to it! I can even deliver within a reasonable distance.

Wish I was closer but I live in Texas. I am wanting to start sewing for my grandkids.

Yeah, that's a little too far for delivery! Sorry!

White is nothing but a brand name that is owned by Viking, which is now part of the group that includes Singer. Sears put White out of business as a manufacturer in the late 1950s, and since then, the name has been used on the machines of many different manufacturers. As a matter of information, White never made a ZZ machine.

I work for Viking, inside of a Joann's. White is made to compete with Walmart, made in China. You get no dealer support, no classes, etc. If you need a simple machine for light sewing, they're fine. They are NOT made for Viking.....nor to Viking specifications. Vikings are bench-made in Sweden. I believe they may own White, but they are a seperate division....like Viking also owns Pfaff. They do not own Singer.

Just like Singer used to be an excellent name in sewing machines, White was also, but now they're made very cheaply and won't hold up like the old ones.

"..like Viking also owns Pfaff. They do not own Singer."

Viking/White/Pfaff is now owned by Kohlberg Management IV, L.L.C., which is also the parent company of Singer. Particulars at:

Most Whites are just cheap Asian machines, but from time to time, Husqvarna (Viking) has produced machines in their Swedish factory with the White label.

And..Janome makes machines for both Pfaff and Viking. I liked the now discontinued Huskystar models made by Janome for Viking but I believe the discontinued models were made in Taiwan as are the Janome made Viking Mega Quilter and Pfaff Grand Quilter. The newer Huskystars for Viking somebody posted are now made in China. I was wondering if Janome is still the maker of these newer Huskystar models available in Joann's stores.
