Hi everyone. I Have been thinking about making a coat for my dog. I will present the coat to him on his birthday (dec 18th) i was wanting to know what sort of materials are good for dogs, he is a great dane. I would also like to have a picture of sir Jimmy saville added into the lining and Willie Thorn ( they are my heroes) on the coat "front" what would be the best way of getting the pictures transfered to cloth? And then how should i go about it> Has anyone did this before. Thanks.

While not having made dog coats before, I would think fabric choice would depend upon where you live. Cold climate? maybe fleece, courderoy, etc. Cotton for warmer climates maybe. You could transfer a photo with the fabric sheets that run through the ink jet printers or maybe an iron on transfer depending on the fabric you make the coat out of. Hopefully someone will come by with more/better ideas?

I like fleece and so does my dog, Lucy. It is stretchy so I don't have to bother with zippers -- fur gets caught in them -- or Velcro which is even worse with fur.
Lucy also likes her beautiful knitted sweater from England but I won't let her wear that outside in the mud and rain.

I would go for fleece. DD made one for our wee dog using Kwik sew pattern using fleece lining and rainproof fabric she is long haired and we dont have a problem with the velcro

Your dog has a knitted sweater from England??? The rock group Rolling Stones are coming here and they are selling wearing apparel for dogs and cats with their insignia on it, big lips and tongue. Apparently it is very popular.

The dog accessories are getting strange. I went to the DMV and there was a lady pushing a stroller. It didnt have a baby in it but a dog. It was a stroller made for a dog. I just about fell out in the floor. I love my dog but to push him around in a stroler and him not be ridding with a child. I just dont know about that.

My son brought home a five year old English bull dog the other day. I think she is overweight. She is built like a fridge with legs! I discovered yesterday that if I get her outside and she sits down, we'll be there for a while because I can't move her. I can't imagine putting that in a carriage. Besides, the dog need exercise...in her case a whole lot of exercise! With my bad back I move pretty slow...but now there is something in our house that is slower than I.

Yes Mary,
My dog does have a very fine knitted sweater from England. It was made by one of the finest knitters you know.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e212/DorothyLong/100_0263.jpg
I tried to make that smaller -- I don't think it worked

Pam,
I just wish my dog would sit down for a minute or two when we are outside but there is far too much going on for that.

Dorothy, Your dog looks smashing her her sweater!

Needleface, I have made quite a few horse blankets in my time and You will essentially be making a pony size blanket for a great dane!!! I love it, and I have always wanted a great dane. As far as material goes it depends on what you are looking to acomplish with the coat. If it is for warmth and depending on where you live I would go with polarfleece lining and a nice heavy cotton or denim outer shell. Since it such a big dog you will not have to worry about bunching and gathering very much likeyou do with smaller dogs. If it is for looks I would maybe get some faux leather and sherpa (or fleece) for the collar part. I have found with my extremely sensative mare that she has to have fleece around the collar of her blankets or they rub the fur off in certain spots. Also since we are talking about a great dane and not a dachshound you can drape the material a little longer so that when he bounces around showing it off it can shift and not leave his body exposed. You may look at a few horse blankets to get the idea!

The strollers are good for little dogs because they tire quickly. If I walk my Shih Tzu with my bigger dogs (I have 5 dogs), I can about guarantee that I'm going to be carrying him part way home. It would be nice to have the stroller and then I could put him in there instead of carrying him. He gets heavy after a while!
I'm looking for patterns for dog clothes, too.

We had 7 up until a few weeks ago also. This has not been a good last month for us and the doggies. We had a chow we had had for 15 years and he past away about three weeks ago of old age. Then over the weekend we had our mini poodle pass away from old age. We still have a terrier, mini terrier, hound dog, and two shelties. Everyone of them spoiled rotten.Let me not forget the frogs,fish,15 horses, and I couldnt tell you how many cats show up to get the free food around here. I counted about 20 strays the other day. We live in the country with plenty of room for more. But I dont think my budget will hold any more LOL. I would love to see your horse blankets. I think my horses would like to have one of those also. They could stay out of the barn more during the winter.

My little four legged girl has a lovely little patchwork fleece coat that I made her last year and she won't wear it. When we put it on her, she stands like a statute and won't move and when you take it off of her, she tries to grab it so she can shake it really hard. She managed to get hold of it one day and I couldn't get it away from her. She drug it around the house for about an hour shaking it and barking at it.

I don't suppose Lucy would keep socks on!

My husband bought her some little booties and when I put them on her back feet I learned how they teach circus dogs to walk on their front legs!!

He sweater is for in the house only or if it has just snowed. She doesn't mind that at all. I keep the heat lower than she would if she could reach the controls.

Too funny:bg: :bg: :bg: My husband purchased a jacket for his black lab when she was about 2 or 3 years old. He put it on her but when he returned from an errand, she had ripped that little jacket to pieces. She was still wearing it but he said she looked like she had been in a fight and lost big time. We still laugh about it!

I've been thinking about making a little jacket for my daughters dog. She's small, though. I've seen a couple of patterns in the Simplicity catalogue and Vogue has released a new one also. There was even a cute one featured in Burda World of Fashion sometime this year as well. Molly has long hair and does shed some. Would it be best to use a smooth woven that can be shaken briskly after wearing or something like fleece? Won't fleece hold onto the hair even after laundering?

Yes, fleece will hold the hair.
But the point for Lucy is not how it looks -- although she does strut a little in a new coat or sweater.
Nor does she really care if there is dog hair on it -- she, like me, is always covered in dog hair anyway.
She likes it because it helps keep her warm when it is cold.
It gets pretty cold around here and when it is really cold Lucy will hide if you try to put her out without a coat.
She is smart enough to know that it keeps her comfortable.
If she lived in a climate where cold was 35 or 40 degrees she might not care if she were dressed or not. But she is practical as well as fashionable.

Dorothy Lucy always looks so sophisticated and well-behaved in her pictures. I'll bet she would never grab one of her coats or sweaters and run around the house with it in her mouth shaking it like she wanted to tear it to shreds. :nah:

Patsy,
No she would not. She saves that for her stuffed toys.
She is very good too and almost never even touches other people's stuff. That's why my husband couldn't figure out why she was tearing at an unpacked box full of VCRs the other day.
I looked and apparently someone had packed some of her toys at the very bottom of that box.

I forgot your footballs are rugby balls - Lucy likes soccer, I am told.

I have seen great Danes wearing very natty neckscarves in the summer.

Dorothy you need to go out while the weather is still nice and get her a new one!! No dog should have to suffer through a stolen ball like that...Especially not one that sits so nice for her pictures!!

My Doxie had a leather harley davidson jacket, he hated it. I think it made him itchie, but he was also all hound dog and a jacket would just hold him back. He ate tennis balls, but only the old funky, smelly ones. When we bought him a new can he would just bury them and it would be months before he would dig them up!

My dog is like Lucy in that she only runs around with her toys or her coat in her mouth. She doesn't bother anything in our house that doesn't belong to her either. As for tennis balls, Sophie has one that stays on the patio that she loves. DH bought her a container of the new flavored squeaky tennis balls for dogs and she won't have anything to do with them. She just sniffs them and walks away but that old dirty one on the patio she loves and everytime I walk out on the back patio she grabs it and wants me to throw it for her.

Speaking of dog coats...have you guys seen these?

http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/voguepatterns/shop.cgi?s.item.V8312=x&TI=20001&page=6

My son brought home a full-grown English Bull dog the other day. I wonder if these come in refrigerator sizes? She is only a little taller than my mini schnautzer but about 8 times wider.

Pam,
I'm sure you could alter the pattern to fit.
I have considered making one of those pretty beds for Lucy. She would like that.
