Iam looking for a good basic book on machine quilting, with lots of tips. My friend recommended Singers Quilt Projects by Machine, but I thought I'd also check with the other experts on the forum to see what you had and what you recommend. She thought that the Singer book had been combined with some other books into a large hardcover but wasn't sure.

Gosh, when I first saw this question I was stumped. I've taken approx. 3 machine quilting classes (beginner I, II and III) at a local quilt store and learned mostly by doing and using some hand outs I was given. But I have bought quite a few machine quilting books. These are my favourite ones that I keep referring too for ideas, info or designs, etc.

For basic machine quilting:
Show Me How To Machine Quilt, A Fun No Mark Approach....Kathy Sandbach.

For a little more advanced quilting designs:
Show Me How to Create Quilting Designs, A Fun No Mark Approach...Kathy Sandbach.

A great book for ideas and includes exercises to practice each technique:
Machine Quilting with Decorative Threads...Maurine Noble and Elizabeth Hendricks.

I have the Kathy Sanbach book which is my latest and I only got it for the practice freeform designs.

I have Machine Quilting Made Easy by Maurine Noble - I bought it several years ago and it covers pretty well everything I have read elsewhere in books and articles. I religiously followed her instructions, made up squares and had one for each exercise. Unfortunately I still have difficulty with stippling - BUT I have discovered the joys of Golden Threads papers!

I ordered our own Marilynn's book from her . I haven't seen a post from her in several weeks, I hope she is O K. I like her book.. The rest of my education has come from ETV programs on quilting.. Our state PBS stations are very good about quilting programs..

I'm fine, Libby, but first I was helping my daughters with their site: www.alonestarjewelry.com and then I woke up with a crick in my neck. For a whole week I could barely turn my head an inch in any direction! It took lotion, cold, heat and a pain prescription before it finally got better. I could listen to the little boys do their reading and that was about it! MariLynntex

This is paper that comes on a roll like wax paper. It is very thin and light gold in colour. One traces a quilting motif onto the paper then makes stacks of the paper (can do quite a lot), place the stack under the one with the motif and sew the motif on the sewing machine with a needle with no thread. You then have a stack of perforated papers with motif. I spray with temporary adhesive, put them where I want on the quilt and then quilt through the paper. I did read one could do this with wax paper as well. The golden thread paper tears away very easily. I believe their web site is Goldenthreads.com.
I haven't tried it but think one could probably run a sheet of paper through a printer (backed with something). I know people use the Press and Seal, but don't believe you can do a stack of papers.

Nancy...I discovered Golden Threads quite some time ago but rarely used it until recently as I usually try to do free hand designs. But I'm in the middle of quilting a UFO from last year and used the GT paper to do a design on each of the blocks. If I ever get it finished...I'll post a pic.

PS. I've tried Press & Seal...but it is a @?*$# to take off, especially if you have to sew over lines...
