We need a showing off section!
I finished this dress about a week ago and finally had an opportunity to have my picture taken in it. Since this is a humid day, my hair is not cooperating. I did not feel like putting on make-up, either. The dress is cute and I thought I would show it to you.
It is made of black cotton gauze and finished with a purple cotton print (I make my own bias) and ceramic buttons eight are purple, four are gray.
It is semi-fitted, but I can always belt it.

That is very nice. I especially like the way you mixed the buttons up. Did you make an effort to do it that way or was it a matter of not having enough of the same color.
I've done that for both reasons.

I really like that style. Is it a Lutterloh pattern? How did you post the picture? I tried that before but it didn't work.

Rats, you've guessed my dirty little secret! But, I have made garments where it was a planned mix.
The buttons were mail order, so I just couldn't go out and get more. I REALLY liked the purple buttons and how they worked with the dress and trim. The plastic purple buttons I had looked cheap and they probably were. I did not have any cool black buttons (got to fix that) to go with the purples. Then I came upon the grays and they are also ceramic. Then it was a matter of making the button arrangement look like an on purpose instead of an oops.

Hi, Kelly!
Yes it is a Lutterloh pattern. I lowered the neckline and sewed the sleeves seams all the way down. I don't like jewel necklines or fabric hanging off my arms. I have made 3 dresses so far with this particular pattern (changing necklines, sleeve width and closures). One is a linen print dress with real mother of pearl buttons and the other is a knit where I eliminated the closure altogether and turned it into a pull over. I wanted a nice T-shirt dress, but not a shapeless one and this pattern really fit the bill. That picture is coming up next. I didn't like how I originally trimmed the dress, so I am changing it. Even after this long, I can still make errors be it in construction or design.
I could not post the pictures as an attachment as they were too big. I had to load them on my website and then insert that url into the body of the post by using that picture icon (yellow with mountains and sun/moon). If you don't have a website, you can use a free photo hosting website such as Webshots. I do have the premium subscription to Webshots because I put a lot of photos there. But you don't have to pay to use the service. I have to remember to put the dress in my portfolio and on Webshots when I'm done here.
Hope that helps.

I did not make the buttons, I ordered them from MJ Trims and the description only said ceramic. It's very hard to see, but the gray buttons have Celtic knotwork etched into them. The repeat on the buttons is 2 purple and 1 gray.
Please excuse any cat fur you may see on the dress. Sorry, couldn't help it and I couldn't brush all of it off.

Kate, that is a really lovely dress. The buttons being different colours too (with Celtic design), and I love bias we make ourselves. I am going to draft Lutterloh soon (a skirt for starters). I am finishing up two UFO's, also. Re: cats, my CoCo, my youngest cat, loves silk ties (a big no no), and often gets into Hubby's cupboard, and runs off with about ten! CoCo also took the silk tie belt out of a RTW jacket that sort of fits (a real motivation to sew), and when I found this under a chair, I realized this would be perfect for straps for a slipdress (a greatly expanded 14). Although it is not 100% successful, it will be fun as jumper/sundress. And all this discussion has me very keen to use Lutterloh for my expansive curves!!! But, I have no digital camera, so can just show off verbally. Happy sewing!!!!!!!!

Hi, Cathie!
I'm glad all this discussion is encouraging you! Real women have a right to look nice and feel good about their appearance, too. I do enjoy having clothes that fit, especially around the waist (small in relation to hips and bust and swayback) and shoulders (wide). I did not have to make adjustments for any of those things. The pants fit perfectly the first time without any adjustments other than length. Now, I have chosen some patterns that did not flatter me as I thought they should, some of those "what was I thinking?" moments. I am working on a nice fitted blouse with princess seams and some more pants.
Let me know how your skirt turns out.

Hi Kate, I haven't been back to this section in a few days. I am looking thru stash for linen-look (some blends), for the skirt with gores and godets, and have my Lutterloh book on hand. Hubby will help me draft soon, as he is gifted this way. I have a defined waist, very large bust, very large hips, and somewhat smaller shoulders, but, they are not wimpy, due to multiple swimming lengths, over the years. I am so glad to have the encouragement, and helpful info, as I had become very discouraged with bad fit. I am still working through my little pile of UFO's. This included two somewhat Pre-Raphaelite Empire dresses (to be worn about knee level, with tights, and flat shoes). In Oct. I am going to be in a benefit fashion show, wearing "better rummage". The styles are nice, and it is a reminder of styles I could try more often, but, no wonder we want to sew. I love finely finished insides, softer fabrics, better fit. I have super long legs, and am short-waisted. So, another reminder why sewing is such a perfect passion. Oh, glad to hear the Lutterloh fits people with swaybacks, that's me too!!!! Happy creating!!!!

What sold me on Lutterloh forever is that I made a perfect fitting pair of pants without having to make any adjusments to the pattern once I drafted it!
The pants fit nicely over my rear and no bump of fabric underneath the waist band. Now, I'm into faced (waistbandless) pants which fit just under the natural waistline. Not low rise or hip huggers, no one wants to see that...including me. The capris I made are very comfortable. I'll have to have a picture taken of them, too.
