embroidery thread? I've been thinking about purchasing the Madeira thread chest ever since it was introduced and actually $1000+ dollars (many moons ago). Now that it seems they are trying to "give" them away, I've been thinking alot harder. Is Madeira good thread? I've only used Coats trilobal and Radiant Threads or is it Thread Art?.... (something I got off ebay). Anyway, the price has dropped so drastically I am wondering if it is because the chest is not selling/popular or ????? $300 is still quite a bit of an investment when absorbed all at once. What has been your experience with this thread?

Hi, I use the Madiera PolyNeon 40 exclusively for embroidering and LOVE it. I bought the chest and find the color selection was great. The thread rarely breaks and is luxurious. I paid less than $300 and got free shipping. I'll give you the site if you want it. I've also used their Aerofil for regular sewing and love that too. I'd say go for it!

It may be nice thread, but theres not a lot on the spools and if you're an embroidery junkie (like me) you need cones or spools with more on them. The chest is nice, the colors are fabulous, but if you run out, can you get the same color ???
Yes I have some Maderia...I like it, but I love Robinson-Anton, and Mettler more...you get more 'bang' for your buck...I use Gutterman for quilting. (plus with RA and Mettler you can ALWAYS find the same colors.).

If you go to www.bfc-creations.com Suz who owns the site is getting in some Amelody thread. The colors are beautiful, small and large cones, GOOD price. Sets or singles. (lots of the 'pros' use this thread...)
BFC also has a web site in Yahoo...Suz is GENEROUS with her freebies too.

Thank you for your input. I think I will probably purchase the chest by the end of the year. Nancy's Notions has a great deal with freebies for purchasing.... sewing machine tote, CD of embroidery designs. Not bad I'd say.

Chrysantha, I was so busy drooling over the color selection that I never took the time to consider the size of the spools. I guess I can always use it for decorative stitching on the sewing machine. I don't embroider much yet and my stitch field is only 4x4. Unless I am in the store choosing colors, I prefer to purchase embroidery thread in pre-packaged sets. Robison Anton thread is only available online, right? Can you purchase it in thread sets? The Mettler thread that you are referring to is the same thread sold at Hancock, right?

Thanks for the replies.

You should be able to get RA at a local store (check the RA site www.robinsonanton.com).
I don't know if Hancocks sells Mettler. We don't have a Hancocks here and I haven't been in one in over 2 yrs.
I get Mettler at my local quilt shop. She sells Mettler, Sulky, Guttermann, 'some' RA.

Yes RA and Mettler can be bought in sets.

I use Isacord as my main brand and Madiera for colors I can't get...like the mixed colors and some of the rayons. I know that all the rage is the little madiera thread chest but there is a full size one with large spools. If you were willing to purchase the $1200 chest, you might want to consider this for far less. I'm sorry, but for the life of me I can't seem to find a link for you. I know that they are reasonable compared to the full cost of a thread set-up. It is like the small thread chests but it is about 5 or 6 drawers of larger spools. They are not available at the "usual spots" like Joanne's or Hancocks but are available in some of the thread shop sites.

I use Madeira exclusively for my machine embroidery. Granted I don't do a lot but I've had very good results on the items I have embroidered.
Happy Stitching!

as someone else mentioned... Marathon is a great thread, especially for the cost... another good choice is ARC, which can be ordered from MelcoMart... great thread, and again, a great price...

Yikes:shock: If only I could make such an investment. Right now I cannot afford to tie up such a large amount of $$$ in embroidery thread. I've had my machine for about 7 months now and have only embroidered 4 items; 3 practice samples and lettering on a t-shirt. For now I will probably get the small chest. It appears inexpensive considering, with it, I'll also get a machine tote and a CD with embroidery designs.

Thank you everyone for taking time to share your information about the embroidery threads you like.

I bought a Madiera Rayon kit last week to try in my machine to see how I liked it. I tested it last night and I really like it. The finished result looked very glossy and neat.

Steph... the only problem with rayon is that it doesn't hold up particularly well on things that get laundered a lot or get bleached... for kid's clothes, kitchen towels, or anything that might get bleached, poly is a very durable choice...

just my 2 cents...

Tara.. rather than spend $300 for the madeira thread chest... check out melcomart... they have their entire ARC poly set (288 spools) each spool 1000 meters, on sale right now for $275... when I got it, with shipping it came to about $295.... that's just over $1 per spool including shipping.... a much better deal than all those little spools... the only thing is, this sale is only good via phone, fax, or e-mail... the site is www.melcomart.com

just my 2 cents..

Thanks for the link mamadus. I'll check out that site later on today. I do need to build up a stash of polyester embroidery thread as most of the thread I have is rayon. This is because I had purchased quite a bit of it to do decorative stitching on my sewing machine long before I bought an embroidery machine. Thanks again.
