Posting pics of the jacket which has been a nightmare to make. The fabric keeps stretching on me, so I have hand sewn the lining at the sleeve edge and hem edge about 3 times now as everytime I hang it up, the fabric has stretched again. You can see on the pic how it is buckling again. Now my inside lining is too short to attach to the body around the hem! The front panels are interfaced, which seems to help some with the stretching. The color doesn't show up as nice as it is, the inside lining is a deep burgandy purple, as is the trim. The fabric has all sorts of colors in it, purple, blue, orange, yellow but you really can't tell. So, what do I do with this stupid fabric that keeps stretching on me??????? Do I iron on fusible interfacing for the whole jacket???? http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v425/LauraBC/Sewing/?action=view¤t=Jacket003.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1 Laura

I wouldn't attatch the lining at the hem. Just hem seperatly & let it hang loose . The sleeves I might just tack in a few places so the lining doesn't ride up the arm. Very nice jacket! Barb

That is just beautiful. At first I was going to say "Yup, interface the whole thing." Or maybe underline. I have a silk tweed fabric like that one and the jacket is underlined rather than lined and I get no stretch. But the fringe might be difficult. (mine doesn't have any because it has fancy lining that is also on the lapels). But you could use a strip of fringed fabric sewn on under that trim. At this point, I think I'd try Barb's idea first. If that works you wouldn't have to take the whole thing apart. Or maybe you could stitch the lining and jacket together at the raw edges of the sleeves and the jacket then turn that up a couple times and hem it by hand. You wouldn't have the fringe there though. Why is it stretching? I think because it is a loose weave and this won't stop until you do fuse the entire garment with interfacing. But maybe the basting raw edges would work, then add fringe separately. It's a lovely jacket. I made a tweed jacket for spring in pretty pastels. I didn't interface and it stretched on me too at the elbows. I was not a happy camper.

Under or innerlining will stop that stretch too, I think. Sometimes I just can't get a regular lining in right (bagged?? they call it) and it does that hangy thing even if the fabric is tightly woven and doesn't stretch. It's a pain. Dorothy |

Maybe the poor girl is having a nap. I have a brown tweed mohair that I want to make up into a jacket. I may have to go thru the same thing. MaryW

It's a great looking jacket. I'd leave it alone, let the linning hang by itself.

Just so you all know, the fringe is actually the fabric of the jacket. It's a frayed edge, so there is two rows of stitching along the edge then I frayed the edges. It worked great at the collar but that is double and also interfaced as is the front panel, the pattern is a princess seamed jacket. The fabric is quite a loose weave, which is accounting for the stretching I'm sure. I could interface the inside alright, since I've had to undo the hem for the lining and just let it hang. It would be a nightmare to have to take it all apart and try to interface it as every seam is double stitched, though I did only serge the seams seperately and not together. I may just leave it, and tack the sleeves and let the lining hang. Besides, who looks at the inside of the jacket anyhow??? I knew this was going to be a tough piece of fabric to work with once I cut out the first pieces and it started fraying almost immediately, then when I did the first seam, it started to stretch. Do you think if I just let it hang for a bit it may quit stretching?? Then I could try tacking the lining in again??

Underlining question, is that where you treat the underlining same as the fabric, so the two pieces are like one, kind of like interfaced??

Yup, it gives the fabric some stability. Actually, it gives body and warmth, not really stability.

It is a lovely jacket. Is it a Boucle? I made for my DD's last Christmas Boucle jackets. One was a loose weave and I underlined it. It help not having it stretched out in the arms at the elbows. I did the fringe on the sleeves. Good luck with the jacket it will be lovely when you get the problems ironed out.

My grandmother once told me thaty ou should never hang anything unless its too short for you. She folded everything except skirts and dresses. Even jackets, she said they strech when they hang too long and then they will hang funny on you.

Hi bridesmom, Is your jacket buckling where you have tacked the lining to it? I also think you should just let it (lining) hang at this point. Finish the lining edge, maybe serge, turn and stitch. I think the fringe on this jacket allows it to take on a shirt/jacket look. Maybe wear a loose and flouncy unstructured top underneath to complete the look? |

ROFLMBO!!!! I know how you feel Mary. In fact, I'm less than a year away from retirement and I'm already beginning to reconsider being home every day (24/7) wiith my dh hanging over my shoulder driving me crazy. Same thing, he's not too short for me but I may end up hanging him. Bridesmom I love your jacket. Hang in there and finish it and you've got a winner!!! I have a piece of boucle that I keep putting off working with because I know it's gonna drive me crazy fraying. Patsy Patsy

DONE! I undid all the hand sewing of the lining to the jacket and just hemmed the lining seperately. It's way better now and I am quite happy with it. But I sure don't think I want to do boucle again! And I just remembered I have a piece of a pink boucle for my GD for a coat. At least with this one I will definitely interface or underline the whole thing first. And its only for a 2 yr old so it won't be as much of a challenge. Now, on to some more fun stuff!!

I made a boucle jacket last year. Was supposed to be knee length, but when i was almost finished for some reason the front piece below my waist in the front all turn in. It was so warped that I ended up cutting it off to just below my bum. Maybe it was stretchy too! What a pain!

Sounds like the same stuff I have, I was thinking it wasn't on the grain, but it was. A good learning lesson, next time (if I can get up the courage) I will definitely interface or underline. I'm going to wear my new jacket tomorrow when going into Vancouver to see my sister, I'm excited to show it off and she what she thinks as she is an excellent seamstress.
