DD(15 today) taught herself how to knit this summer. does anyone know of any free online pattern for socks that a beginner could do? Or any other easy patterns. She really wants to do a sweater but I think she should try something a little less fitted first.

Socks are not necessarily a beginners thing - hats yes. A sweater is not fitted and will teach you how to shape and if you get the fab fun wool there is about at the moment and big needles it won't be too daunting. I'll hunt about an see what I can find...

Thanks Jan! I knew I could count on you. I know nothing about knitting & wouldn't know a beginner pattern from an expert if I tried.

She could do like me -- knit something and figure out what it is later. Dorothy |

I've been knitting forever but haven't advanced much. Socks are not a beginning project in my opionion. For patterns www.lionbrand.com is awesome. Hundreds of patterns. www.knitting.about.com is another good source. Both are all free. Good for her. My dd started crocheting at about that age. I got such a kick out of her. She's a chatterbox and her needle was moving as fast as her mouth! good luck to her, Lennie |

http://www.craftbits.com/viewCategory.do?categoryID=NED#Knitting%20-%20Novelty has some wacky ideas and not too tricky patterns. Hats, scarves and knitted food (!). Start with a project that is not too big. Lennie is right - the other two sites she mentioned are full of ideas She might like to try a shrug or little cardigan - very popular amongst the young - again there will be a lot of shaping but that is good! Something like this http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/50947.html http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/kcw-hatScarf.html is a good beginners pattern as is this http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/kmstripe-ribStitchHatAndScarf.html knitted with Magic Wool! Chunky wool on big needles will help her to knit up a jumper in no time - it is about the same as knitting a toddler jumper and grows quickly to encourage the beginner. It can be really daunting starting out to knit yourself a jumper in double knitting and it goes on for ever.. There is as much work in the sleeves as the back or front and you don't want her to run out of steam on a really big project. Cruise around the lion brand site - they label their patterns according to difficulty which is really useful. I think you have to register with them to get access to the free patterns but they don't bombard you with spam. love and kisses, Jan

Thanks I will tell her. I am so glad this week is over. I think it is the busiest week of the yr. for me. My Bday was last Wed. The kids had a party for me last weekend (the big 5-0),DS birthday was friday & dd on Sat. Along with school Openhouses & union meetings I am beat. I have not done anything constructive today except take a shower.

Barb, I wanted to start making socks again and ran across this site. It is a class for making socks and it is free!http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Beginning.htm These are cute boots for around the house. Don't know if I would even attempt them at this point but it is something to think about later once she gets more practice. http://www.tropicalyarns.com/index.cfm?PID=22&ProdID=307 Then there is this http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com I'm glad you daughter was interested in learning. My girls didn't even want to try. Not knitting, not sewing, not crocheting, nothing! I tried to get them interested but it just wasn't there. Brockie

Brockie, I feel the same way. I have one dd, 25, and aside from the two or three crochet projects she has no interest in any other forms of needlework. I have a machine for her and we both have the time for her to learn. She lives only 1.5 mi. from me. Too bad but I don't force the issue. Maybe she'll come around. Lennie |
