I have always used Coats and Clark thread until just recently when a friend of mine told me to chuck all the C&C I ever had! The CC thread was giving me some pretty major lint balls in my machine and the garments I made with it were not held together the best in my opinion. I started using Gutermann. However, I have still been getting a lot of lint in my machine. Gutermann is supposed to be a quality thread. Could it possibly be because I have been sewing like a banshee? Also, I bought some Mettler thread today. Which is better, Gutermann or Mettler?

All thread is going to give off some lint. That's the nature of the beast. I like Gutterman and Mettler because they seem to do it far less. Other things you can check to minimize the lint is to make sure your needles are proper size for the weight of your fabric and size of your thread. Use a new needle at the start of each new garment, needles are inexpensive and easy to replace. And, check your throat plate for burrs, scratches and other irregularities. If your throat plate is damaged, either replace it or smooth it down with an emery compound (many sewing machine stores sell this).
As far as which one is better, Gutterman and Mettler are about equal in quality. It just depends on which one has the color and weight I want at the time. Most often it comes down to which one I can find first.

Dido everything Katherine said. I carry both Gutterman and Mettler. I personally prefer Gutterman but most my customers prefer Mettler. They're both good.
I can't tell you how often people will come in with a problem and after we pull the C&C off the machine and put a good thread on everything is fine.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Another vote for Gutterman.

I have used C&C but like the quality of the stitch strength and minimal lint of Gutterman.

I go back and forth between Gutterman and Mettler, mostly because that's all I can get at the local store. Though I did cringe and bite the bullet when I bought some C&C Embroidery thread cause I couldn't get the color I wanted in the other stuff, and so far it's been just fine.
