This stray was wandering our neighborhood for a couple of days. Then yesterday it followed my son home and sat looking in my front door window. My husband put her in the back yard and drove around looking for signs and calling all that he saw. No luck. So today I took her to the vet to see if she has one of those microchips. No luck there either. She is so lovable and appears to be a purebred Chocolate Lab. I can't imagine someone not wanting her. It appears that she has been an outdoor dog all her short life (about six months) as she doesn't even try to come in the house and she happily slept in our backyard all night long in a thunder storm. I put up a sign at the vet, and plan to get some out around the neighborhood today. Taking her to the pound is not an option (they are not accepting drop offs) and letting her run the neighborhood is out too. So I need some sage advice here. How long should I wait before just accepting that we have been adopted and take her to get fixed, chipped and sign me up for obedience classes? Gina

Oh Gina! Keep her! We got one of our three that way and she is the sweetest little mutt. Love her to pieces. She was about 4 months, never been in a house and so timid. My husband was instantly smitten but I was more reserved since we already had a lab and Golden (both rescued and both 120lbs.) Silly me! I didn't think we needed a third dog. I put up signs all over town and ran an ad in our local small town paper. No results but dh was already saying by the end of the first day, "If anyone calls to claim her tell them we've already found the owner!" lol I'd say put an ad in the paper and if no one claims her after the ad has run she is yours! Lucky you. Labs are incredible but if you're not familiar with the breed read up on it. They're obnoxious as heck but also the happiest and most loving dogs you'll ever have. Awesome for your son! We named our little girl Betty after a Paul Simon song. Dh held her up, looked her in the eye and said, "What are we going to name you?" I know, "I'll call you Betty and you can call me Al." Dh was kidding. I wasn't. I thought it was a perfect name and suits her perfectly. Out of our 6 animals she's our only little girl. Good Luck and let us know what you do. Lennie |

I wouldn't wait to long to get her fixed or you may have more than one new pup!! I'd give it a week or so. Why not ask the vet what he or she thinks is an appropriate wait. Dorothy |

Dorothy, My thoughts exactly. Don't need a bunch of little labra-what-evers. Wherever she came from they didn't have steps. She got herself up the steps to my second floor patio and couldn't get down. I had to lug her heavy rear-end down they steps. Any sugestions on training a dog to go down steps? Gina

Accept the fact that your family has been adopted, even if you didn't plan on it, by the dog. It knew it would be going to a very good family. I agree with the others, get it fixed ASAP. My DB had a black lab that was just great with everyone, even when his GD was a little flea on the rug herself. Teal was very patience and a great playmate when outside for his GD. She also let you know when someone was walking up the driveway that she didn't know and would stick to the baby like glue. |

I hate to be the differing opinion but I'd wait till after you've advertised a week or so. Give the owner a fair chance to respond. After that, by all means, have the baby spayed. Absolutely! You might even find that she's already fixed. Hard to tell with a female. I did that with a cat that adopted us. I saw something hanging there in the back but never felt. Turned out he'd already had the operation! lol lol Surprised me! Lennie |

Oh I wish that a puppy would follow me home too!! I'd love to have a dog or a cat but DH (not dear this time) absolutely refuses to consider one. I miss our dogs so much and now with no kids here, it would be so nice. How wonderful for you. My son has a golden lab, he's adorable (the dog), actually son's pretty adorable most of the time

Labs are wonderful!! I would have another one in a heartbeat. I got my first Lab and last dog when he was about 10. I had had a car accident and broke my back and he was just my speed. He watched over me like a mother(opps, sorry Eli, father hen). Then when my DH decided we needed to wean 5 kittens and give them to homes, Eli let them use him for.... mountain climbing and loved it. He was half blind and when he saw movement lower than his knees he would stand still until they had all moved out of the way so he wouldn't step on any of them. He took me on walks until I recovered. We finally had to put him down 5 years later. He was full of cancer, he couldn't stand or laydown for long. I would take another one in a heartbeat! Bekka Bekka

What a sweet story, Bekka. Hope you've fully recovered. There's a reason labs are the #1 dog in the States. Here in Ca. a dog is legally yours if you've made reasonable attempts to find the owner and had no response for 3 weeks, I believe. That's the technical version. After 3 weeks the owner has no claim what-so-ever. Your local agency can tell you what it is in Texas. I'll bet they have a similar rule. Good luck and let us know. Lennie |

When I took her to the vet (to check for the microchip) they said she was a little young yet to be spayed but they checked her anyway. She'll need to be done as soon as I claim her as mine. The vet-tech also agreed that a week after putting up signs is reasonable. After all don't you think that if they really wanted her they would have been plastering signs up all over the neighborhood as soon as she had been missing overnight. I know when my Moose went missing I was on the phone instantly calling all the animal shelters to see if anyone had brought him in. Luckily right after I had called, someone called to report him as found. My hubby did the same thing this time he called all the local shelters but nobody seems to be looking for her. I did get a call this morning at 6:30, but they were looking for a weiner dog. Well I bought her some snacks and some toys today. I figure I might as well start with some basic training so she gets used to me being the boss. I can teach simple stuff like speak, shake, sit, and down but I really want to have her be a well behaved dog. People thought it was quite cute when my Cocker Spaniel would jump in their laps as soon as they sat down, but I am sure that most people would prefer to not have a labrador in their lap. I will post a picture as soon as I find the digital camera. The darn thing is burried under fabric somewhere in here. I know it is. Gina

Sounds like you have a new family member. The ones that pick you are always the best pets. Are you sure he followed your son home? Just kidding, but it reminded me of my sister when we were little. She came home from school one day and told mom that this dog had followed her home. We wound up keeping him. Later my aunt told our mother that she had seen my sister walking home past her house and she was carrying the dog. He had been a stray that stayed around the school building all the time. We've had 2 labs and they are the best dogs we've ever had. One is 14 years old now. Her sister had cancer and we had to have her put down last year, but had her for 13 years. |

Well I am pretty sure that she followed him (chased is more like it). One reason being they are about the same size (no way he could have carried her). The other being he is afraid of strange dogs and was crying when he came home because she wouldn't leave him alone. Well after a more calm introduction they are best buds now and she can't wait for him to get home from school. I agree about getting a better pet when they pick you. My beloved Moose, who had to be put down in January, picked me. I was staying at my cousin's house while attending her brother's wedding and she had a house full of puppies ready for new homes. Moose would not leave me alone. I did not intend on getting a dog on that trip but I am glad I did. We had a wonderful 14 yrs. together. He saw me through 2 marriages and 4 kids and too many deaths (including my mother). I don't know how I would have made it through all that without him. Now I have a new friend who chose me and I feel twice blessed. I find it kind of funny that my life has come full circle again. I was working at McDonald's when Moose picked me and now I am back at McDonald's only to be picked again. Maybe it has something to do with smelling like french fries? What dog could resist me? Gina

Got a call this afternoon. She is mine if I want her. Turns out she belonged to my neighbor's daughter's friend's ex-neighbor. Isn't that confusing. So anyway they moved to an apartment and couldn't take her. My neighbor ended up with her and was trying to find a home for her when she dug her way out. So now I have to name her. I like unusual names. My Cocker Spaniel was named Moose. It fit him because he was twice the size of his littermates but it is not a typical Cocker name. I won't name a brown dog Chocolate, or a dalmation Dot, but I do like the name to reflect something about the dog but with an unusual twist. I've been thinking Julie so I can call her Drooly Julie . Then the kids said why not Druliet or Drooliet . Oh! This dog naming is going to be hard with four people giving me input and a husband who says "Doesn't matter to me I am just gonna call her stupid dog." Now to get the house puppy proof (been keeping her out back so we didn't get too attached) uugggghhhhh!!!!!! Gotta sign me up for some obedience classes too!!! Gina

Lucky you, Gina! Don't forget she's a digger. Hopefully she's outgrow that. If you let her in the house she may not be so anxious to escape though. Do you know her breed for sure now? Is she full lab? Names are tough. I told you about our Betty and how she was named that. Our boys are Max, Fred, Oscar, Frank, Leo, and Jack. Along with Betty I'm sure you can see the trend here, old people names. I always think of a old group of friends hanging out and having a good time. How about Coco? Not real original but a good name for a chocolate girl......... good luck... Lennie |

Our (ferret kids) are Sam, Jack, Mikey (his first name was Merlin, but when we got him as a rescue we re-named him, he's deaf, it's not like he cares..) and Piper. (she had her name, she came with Mikey, we liked the name and she can hear, so we kept it.) Our now deceased were Bob, Zoey, Harry, Girl, Scooter and Monster (but I usually called him Babydoll or just Baby). How about Godiva. (it's chocolate...) Hershey, Marsha (as in Mar's candy) Dove, (also chocolate) (theres a couple of brothers who make chocolate sauce to die for, in OR, called ) Paradigm not very feminine...but unusual... Fudge, Brownie, how about Chicklet...(it's not chocolate, and it's unusual)... Chrys

Green and Black's , now THAT's chocolate! We had Lord Charles, Sir Percivale(Charlie and Percy), Squire Icabod (sticky Icky),Lady Charlotte (lotte),Emma, Inky,( he was all black as opposed the the aristos wearing tuxes) Rachel, Gul DuKat ( a stripy carnivore - he was virtually cardasian..) Oona ( a fairy thing) and Scat. What is her character like? Call her Digger - or Mutly or whatever - though I quite like Drooliet. You have to think of how you will feel yelling her name in the park... love and kisses, Jan

Congratulations!! I want to see a picture too. Our lab is named Sally. We've taken to calling her 'Ol Sally Girl. Our "baby" is named Lulu. Lately everyone calls her Lulabug. Hubby always names the dogs. He looks at them for a while and says, "Okay this one looks like a ........ ____" Dd and I always name the cats. Enjoy your new dog. Don't forget that Labs are chewers too. When our 2 were puppies, I came home one day and they had chewed up the cushions in the porch swing. Fiberfill was all over the yard. It was too funny for me to be mad. They were still shaking the empty fabric. We learned not to have anything like that where they could get to it. DS also lost a couple of stuffed animals. |

Yep she is a chewer. Chewed up quite a few things already. Mostly sun weakend buckets and shovels from the sand box. She also ripped up a bicycle seat. It was already starting to tear (must have been too tempting). Kids have orders to remove anything they don't want destroyed from the "dog zone". I am trying to figure out how to block off the sewing room (no doors) before I let her in. I had this whole plan for what I was going to do before we got a new dog. Now I have to improvise. Just like having another kid. Gina

Get her a nylabone designed for strong chewers. My PJ likes to chew, and she just loves her nylabones. If she ever chewed anything she wasnt supposed to, we'd tell her "no", take it away, then give her the bone. She has a basket all her own with a couple of bones and tennis balls. She carries them around. About 50% of the time she puts her old one back before taking a new toy.

How wonderful - a new puppy! My dh would love to get a new puppy but there isn't a dog house big enough for the both of them. Since you mentioned not having a door to your sewing room could you use one of those pressurized baby gates to keep the new family addition out? Half of the baby gates we have in our house are used more for the dogs than my dd. We have two dogs: a collie mix named Zoe (dh & other firefighters rescued a bunch of puppies from an abandoned house fire) and Connor, my "little boy" (98 lbs), a full Golden Retriever. I was going to name him Cody but Connor just seemed to fit better. It'd be great to keep them outside but Connor would dig a hole to China! DH wasn't too happy to look over one afternoon and see him digging up the new grass seed! - Maureen.

We had a 1/2 black lab, 1/2 setter (last dog at home) and when MY Mom died, I took him home with me. He was 130 lbs of black sweetie. Never barked, never chewed anything but his 'toys'. Hated water..would eat veggies, especially potato peelings out of the trash. Loved to crunch ice cubes. He also liked to carry rocks around in his mouth. He wouldn't chew, just carry. He was the best mannered, prettiest dog we ever had. Pyewacket (named after the cat in the movie, Bell, Book and Candle, cause we got him at Halloween...the one male in a litter of 9) Chrys

Baby gates don't work. The doorway is doublewide. I have been thinking about putting up one of those pegboard pressure walls and using the other entrance which is a single doorway. Gotta go price that wall. I think they had them at Lowes or Home Depot. I have a feeling that this dog is gonna max out the credit card this month. Her vet bills are gonna top $300 to get her shots, microchip and spaying. Oh well. I think she is worth it. Still no name. But we are leaning towards Juliet on paper and just letting the kids call her Drooliet.

Our lab has always picked up rocks with her mouth too. She doesn't chew on anything now because she's 14 and her teeth aren't what they used to be. I still see her pick up rocks sometimes tho. I have to give her softer food now or she won't eat. Our little one is the chewer now. She loves Busy Bones. We discovered "Fortune Snookies" treats a few weeks ago. My dogs LOVE them. Plus each one has a little fortune or saying printed on it to give me a smile everyday. |

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/keljo60/detail?.dir=4aa7re2&.dnm=5bbdscd.jpg&.src=ph My dh wasn't a dog person, until he met my Rocky! I love Boston Terriers, but they're not common and VERY expensive when you do find them! I managed to locage a Boston Terrier/Chihuahua mix at the Titusville (FL) SPCA almost 3 years ago. He was listed as a BT, but when I looked at the pic all I saw was Chihuahua! I called and questioned that and the lady said, "When you see him you will understand." I was able to do the adoption papers for him through fax and when I drove the 1.5 hours to get him I definitely understood! He weighs about 10 lbs, head looks like a Chi, body is stocky like a BT! He wants so much to be outgoing and friendly like the BT, but is afraid of new people like the Chi! He shakes like a Chi too! He is definitely a people too and dh just loves him! Before we moved here they would take the 4 hr road trip up here and stay the weekend together! I love my baby! Quick question, if you look at his pic you will see how long his nails are getting. What's a good rule-of-thumb for how much to cut off? I'm afraid I'll cut them too short since I can't see the "quick". Kelly

Kelly, The thing about the quick is that if you let the nail grow that long then the quick grows with it. What you will have to do is cut a little off each week. They make clippers with a guard on them so you don't cut too much off. Personally I would take him to the groomer or the vet because they are professionals and have the stuff on hand to stop the bleeding if it starts. Then ask them how often you should clip his nails to avoid them getting that long again. Gina

I think your baby is cute Kelly...no matter what he's called (and to me he looks like a Chihuahua too.). My Mom got one of the neighbors puppies one time he was half Chihuahua and half Boston terrier too...He looked like a combo of both, but liked to stand up on his hind legs and walk like a human. He attached himself to my Dad and my Dad had a heartattack...He was in the hospital about 3 wks..(this was back in the 70's when they didn't have the know how and meds they have now), the dog went nuts, cause my Dad couldn't come home..(litterally) We'd take him to the hospital and hold him up so he could see my Dad, but it wasn't enough and the dog had to be PTS. I'd never seen an animal go insane before. ( I was only 21...) It's scary...

That's sad, Chrysantha. This summer while a neighbour lady was in hospital we other neighbours took turns walking the little doggy, a Schnaunzer, while the husband drove up and down the highway to be with his wife. Little doggy had a bed but was always in the big front window when I went over and back there even before I left her. She was watching for "Mom" to come home. Sadly, her Mom died, but little doggy continued to watch from the window. The husband told my DH about three and a half weeks after his wife's death that little doggy had finally gone back to her own bed and had given up watching from the window. She'd been doing it for almost two months. |
