A friend just gave me a Singer Fashion Mate 257 sewing machine and I do not have the manual to thread it. Can anyone help?

Sherry I have a 257. I'm at work right now but if no one else appears to help before I get home, I'll take a picture of my 257 threaded so you can see then I'll try to do a step by step. I don't have the manual for mine either but I own 2 other Singer machines so I didn't have any problem threading it.

I would appreciate any help. I have tried a couple different ways and it does not work right.
I shall keep my eye open here.
Thanks to all!

I am still amazed at what is available on the internet. I am a novice here, but I am learning from all of you.

Sherry the 257 that was given to me by my dh's boss is like brand new. It belonged to his mother who purchased it new and from the looks of it, it was used very little. I love doing free motion quilting with it. My regular sew and quilt piecing are done on my Pfaff 2044 Quilt Expression.

to use the zigzag on this Singer Fashion Mate 257. I have never used a zigzag before (only ancient straight stitch ones). I know for straight stitch the needle should be in the center, but not sure if it is supposed to be set at L or R for zigzag.

I believe it has to be set in the center, for zigzag. My sister has this machine, and I taught her to thread it and use the stitches, but that was a few years ago. She didn't have the manual either, so I printed off the diagrams from the website that someone else gave here. I cleaned up the diagrams so there wasn't a lot of print on them, so they'd be easier to read.

Anyway, try the center and adjust only the stitch width. If the needle is to the left or right of center it might hit the foot. If that doesn't work, slowly move it to one side, and take one stitch at a time, BY HAND, and WATCH where the needle is going, so you don't let it hit the foot. That way you can safely experiment with it, to get the right setting. Then I recommend that you write down what settings to use for zigzaging and print off the diagram and mark on it, which levers you have to move and where to set them. (If case you forget).

If you would like me to email you the diagrams, just send a private reply to me and give me your email address, and I'll send you a copy, which you can print off and keep with your machine.
