Does anyone know how to make a Bubble skirt for a 1 year old? I am assuming you fold the fabric in half and then sew it in a circle? I am clueless, help! |

There is a stay under the top layer. You can either use a round layer on top or a gathered top layer. The stay underneath is straight or slightly angled like an "a" line and is shorter probably at least 2 inches shorter. You just gather the top layer to the stay with the seam between the layers. The join both layers at the bustline. These suckers are awful to press so I'd tell you to find something with enough polyester in it that you don't have to press this often.

I didn't feel as verbally fluent as Pam today! Here's one quickie way: http://www.squidoo.com/reconstructionfashion/ There seem to be many variations on the style. I had a semi-formal bubble skirt dress once, and it felt like it had some scrunched crinoline inside it to help it keep its shape. I like the idea of an a-line lining, which is much shorter than the outerskirt--Sew the fuller overskirt, gathered, to the bottom of the underskirt/lining, and yes, you could attach at the top with an elastic waistband for a baby's skirt. The fullness in the outerskirt, gathered into the underskirt is what helps get the little poof. Could do with some colorful tulle some time and make a really fun tutu, as well. Have fun with it, and let us know what you come up with! Andrea

Oh thank you, Andrea! Old age dementia is creeping...no running in. I forgot to tell you to put 2 layers of netting in each piece of the top skirt...DO NOT use tuille or illusion, they are too floppy. Besides, Netting is much cheaper! You make two layers for each top skirt piece and baste them (around the outside edges) to the piece before you ever start...you just treat each section as one piece of fabric. This is what makes the "bubble" stand out. There are other things that can be used like stiff interfacing but nothing is a light and cheap as net and it does a lovely job! Washing will not hurt it either. Can you tell these have been out of style a bit? I don't think I've made one for about 12-13 years since my oldest was about 5 or 6. pam

Haha! It was 1989. Crazy that I can recall the year in which I wore a bubble skirt dress to a semi formal in college, but I can't remember what model and year my car is. I'm seeing those skirts come back now, though, as ksirts in all shapes and forms are prancing up and down the runways!
