So it's three weeks to the day before i fly over to New york for a two week holiday. I can't wait! I'll be seeing my boyfriend for the first time in 4 months! We might be going to Washington DC and the Niagra falls if w can manage it. I'm so excited! Anyone have any recommendations for what is a must to see or do? I want to see as much as possible! If you get to DC, go to the Viet Nam wall, try and see 'some' of the Smithsonian. Go see the Pentagon (they won't let you visit, but you can see how big the darn thing is...) Visit Arlington Cemetary... If you want bargains...Dale City, Virginia has THE biggest outlet mall in the US. I think it's called Woodbridge Mall (I only lived in Woodbridge for 9 mnths back in the 90's and my 50 yr old brain is dead tonight.) Almost everything is on the Metro (underground/above ground subway...VERY clean...) Kath ( the U.S. travel guide...) Chrys

Jenny Alice - I don't know how old you are but my physio therapist is about to retire and has been in Canada for 35 years. Her Irish accent is a strong as the day she arrived. She went to Washington DC several months ago and explained to me that it was important for Irish people to see the places they heard about from families who immigrated. Do you have friends or famlies that have planted memories in you? I am afraid that living almost diagonally across North America I do not have any suggestions for you. The places you have indicated, New York, Washington and Niagra Falls, are quite apart from each other (many Europeans have no concept of the distances between places in NA) and you may end up travelling more than looking and visiting and hugging your boyfriend . But whatever - have a wonderful time. *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

If you have the time a nice leisurely drive or train ride to Niagara Falls from New York would give you lots of beautiful foliage to look at this time of year. You could even stop for a night at a pretty inn or something along the way. When you get there, cross the bridge to the Canadian side, it is much nicer. Dorothy |

Jenny Alice, Sancin makes a very important point about the distances you will travel in order to visit different cities. How are you planning on going to Niagara Falls? Dorothy and I live in Central New York area (the Finger Lakes) and we are about 4 1/2 hours from NY City by car. From here it is about another 3 hours to Buffalo. The train will take a bit longer traveling, but as Dorothy said, you will be able to enjoy your boyfriend (I mean the terrific fall scenery )without worrying about driving. To get to Philadelphia (Philly) it is about 1 1/2 hours by car from New York and about 2 1/2 by bus unless you take an express bus (my daughter calls it the China Towne) and then it is 1 1/2 hours. Going outside of New York city will be less of a financial strain, however, if you're planning on buying fabric, you're not going to find another garment district that is quite as much fun and exciting as the shops in the City. I'm excited for you! You will love NY! Patty

Hi, thanks a mill for all the suggestions! I'm not really sure how we're going to get to these places. It was my boyfriend who suggested it in the first place. Probably by the train or if we can afford it, by plane. It depends on how much shopping i can get in, that's MOST important I've been told woodbury common is the place to go for shopping and i'm going to set aside a whole day for visiting the garment district (and plenty of money!). I don't really have family over there (we're real home boddies). i have a cousin in California but i think that might be a bit far to go. When in D.C. go to the zoo - it is great and a great time of year to go. The Georgetown area of D.C. is ....unique (to say the least) and I always enjoyed going there to sight see. while in NYC take in a Broadway show and Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty. I know those are very common tourist destinations but well worth it. Something about looking out from the statue is just so awe inspiring. |

If you shop in the garment district take cash, not credit cards, traveler's checks or checks. They like it when there is no paper trail and the price goes down accordingly. Dorothy |
