What a beautiful quilt! I've only been here a month or so. Can you tell me (and other newbies) the story behind this wonderful gift?

Hey Lennie, I've been a member of this group since Dec 2002. Since that time I'm made some really special friends on here which you will see how special they all are if you stay here for any lenght of time. Each and everyone of them are very special in their own way. If you're hurting they are there for you. Kind of like a neighbor that is half way across the world. When you're sick they are like the ones that bring you soup but this soup is not the kind you eat it's the kind for the soul. My house was hit last year by Katrina and I didn't lose much of my sewing things I did lose my furniture and some of my things including my house that I couldn't go back to because of the mold and mildew and the fact that it's not safe there anymore because of the levee systems not being what they should be to protect my community. After the hurricane everyone asked me what I needed and really didn't need anything. My needs were taken care of and I took my sewing machines with me when I evacuated so I had them. Then when I was able to get back to my home I found out I had only 12 or so inches of water in my house and all my fabric that was in sealed plastic containers was safe. I really felt lucky because most of the people in my community had 20 feet of water over the roof of their houses and I had only 12 inches. I think the ladies felt they wanted to do something for me and believe me when I say this they did more than anything they could have done for me. They sent me a peice of theirselves that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I feel their love all the way across the world. One of these blocks is from New Zealand. They are very special people stay here and you will feel the love from them too. Hugs susie

Susie,

One of the blocks is mine. I did sign it and loved making it for you.

I would like to thank Texasangel for putting it together. It turned out great. I can't remember who quilted it but you did a beautiful job.

Enjoy the quilt Susie. It was made with love.

So..Susie you will just have to accept my heartfelt wishes for all to continue to go well for you. I was so happy when I heard you were all safe after Katrina. Whoever put it together did a great job!

Oh Carolyn it is wonderful!!! I feel the love from you all. Alison wrote in her letter to me included in the box that some of you sent money for the binding and batting and I want to thank you all because I know what each one of you did came from your hearts.

Christy Bonnet aka Texas Angel put the quilt together and Alison E Miner quilted it in Maine. She has the Berry Patch Quilting and she did a wonderful job quilting it. Christy you must have know my colors because I'm a red/marron person and that's what you put for the back and binding. The contrast you used for the blocks to stand out really made each one pop out. Every sashing and all the borders are perfect. I love it and thank you. Thank you all. I wish my husband would wake up.

I LOVE YOU ALL GOD BLESS YOU!!

Thanks Trini, I guess they had to stop taking blocks there was twenty blocks in the quilt beside the sashing and borders so I guess it would have been a really big quilt had everyone joined.

I'm not a big saints fan but them in the dome for the first time since the storm is a big deal for all of us that went through the last year. And to top it off they are coming into this game 2-0. Thanks, Susie, for explaining the meaning of the quilt. I am impressed by the quality of kindness I have seen here. I, like everyone else, can't even put into words how hard the devastation of Katrina was to watch. I can't imagine living it like you did. Amazing.

You seem like a very sweet and special person and I'm not at all surprised that everyone pulled together for you.

Best of luck to you and I'll see you on the board.

Bud you did the tag? You little sneak. Thank you very much. You little devil. Call me when you get up in the morning I know what time it's going to be here I'll be up waiting on your call. And I know you can quilt. If I can do it anybody can. Just put all the love you have in it and you can make a wonderful quilt.

Lenny, You can't imagine the devestation unless you see it in person. A lot of people who came here said just that......it's not overwhelming until you see it in person. Then you get the true picture of what it's like. Some parts of my community are still the same as the day it happened. Out of 68000 people there are less than 15000 back. Out of 28000 homes only 2 didn't get water and how they didn't is beyond me. The levees broke in so many places that the water from the gulf came in and was like there was no land there to begin with. When it went out it left mud, some of it 3 feet deep, rot and dead animals. Pushing cars and anything in it's path out the way. Even houses on slabs were found blocks away from where they once stood still with the slab attached to them. Then the heat set in and the mold and mildew set in and if the water didn't ruin it the mold and mildew did. People are sick down there trying to live there. Staff infections are wide spread. If you want to know how it is just imagine how you would feel if one day you left home and when you went back there was no one there and nothing left of the community you loved. People are scattered all over the place and some never knew your name but are wondering where you went. Like the ladies in Walmart, one was named Gayle and one was Alice. They say they are in Texas but I'll probably never see them again and I came to enjoy going to see them there. Enough of all that I have to stay happy. :bluesad:

Susie, Thanks for the personal description. I don't know anyone that went through it like you did, or at all for that matter.

I can say that I do know in a small way what you went through. In 2003 we had a devastating wildfire, The Cedar Fire, that was started by a careless amateur "hunter" who used a flare when he got lost with the east winds blowing and the humidity almost non existant. The fire consumed 265,000 acres in 6 days going all the way down into San Diego. We're an hour's drive from the outskirts of S.D.

Had it gone on one more day my house would have been gone. The weather changed at 3:00 that Thursday morning it was headed straight for us and we were spared. I had evacuated after the second day along with everyone else in our small town. My husband is Fire Chief here and he continues to say that that fighting the fire was the "easy" part. Dealing with the aftermath continues in his day to day work. Our community of 4000people lost 700 homes. No lives were lost in our community (except an out of town firefighter) but there were 17, I think, total when all was said and done. Many of the homes lost were second/vacation homes but still so many folks I know lost theirs. Many have rebuilt and are continuing to do so.

The year before, 2002, we also had a wildfire that came to within a mile of our house. I watched it burn on the hills from my dining room window. We only evacuated for 3 days that time but believe me, that scare rears it's ugly head everytime July comes around and doesn't go away till the end of October.

I know this is NOTHING compared to your losses. It's but a small comparison and helps me understand just a little of what you must have experienced.

Glad to see your sunny disposition shining through. I'm sure it's helped you deal with it all.

Take Care, Lennie

Hi Susie and everybody,
It's so great to be able to talk about this now. We've all been anxiously waiting to hear from you Susie about the arrival of the quilt. I, for one, always worry about the mail system until the delivery happens.

This has been a long time in coming, but well worth the wait. I'm so glad that you are enjoying all the love and kindness sent with it, too. None of us can imagine what you and your family and friends have gone through after Katrina, but we want things to get better. I wish it all could happen faster.

I was the recipient of a beautiful quilt after my husband died in 2004 and can never fully repay the kindnesses extended to me for it. I can only do my little part by sharing with others in the future.

Enjoy the quilt, Susie. We're all pulling for you. And we've made new friends.

Love ya'

I'm so glad you love the quilt. It was one of the most fun things I've done in a long time! There must be blocks from all over the place! So glad you liked it Susie.

Susie the quilt is beautiful and I wish I had had the opportunity to participate in it also. For everyone who was affected by Katrina and especially those folks who lost absolutely every possession they owned, my heart went and still goes out to you and admiration for the strength and courage the majority of you have shown in rebuilding and reestablishing your lives to some semblance of normalcy (whatever that might be for you and your family.

I still want to know all about this from each one of you and what you went through doing this. I spoke to Bren this morning and she told me that you all started on this last year!!! Wow I know now how you all must have felt about hearing it came in the mail. Finally all that work was finally getting where it was suppose to be.

Alison, Bren told me about your husband today when I spoke to her and about your quilt shop. Do you take quilts in to quilt for hire? I'd love to send you my quilts when I finish them. I'd rather you get my money than someone I don't know. The lady at the quilt shop that I go to has a lady that does it but they pick it up at the shop and bring it back to the shop. If I ever get the ones I've started finished I'd love for you to do them you did such a great job on this one. Thank you again.

Christy, You did a great job of putting it all together. I keep going back in there and looking at it to make sure it's real......and that I wasn't dreaming it came.

When my husband woke up I had it over my sofa and he told me it's beautiful, and they must have thought a lot of you to do that for you. I tell him all the time what wonderful people you all are on here now he knows I'm not exaggerating. I wish I could kiss and hug all of you and thank you all in person.

Please let me know Christy who all sent in blocks. Some of them didn't sign them and I really don't want to leave anyone out in my thank yous. I see names I don't reconize on the quilt but probably know them by their screen names.

I have been sick with this head cold for the past three days and feel like yuck, but when I went to the post office and they didn't have the package there I was determined to go back until I recieved it. I couldn't imagine what it was.

Lennie, you know the fear if you are in the forrest fire area like many of us in the hurricane zones. One day it's all here and the next in a split second it's all gone and changed forever. It makes us think not to take things for granted like we use to before the storm.

Okay everyone here's who I can see that signed their blocks. I also was told that some of you didn't make blocks but sent in money to take care of binding, batting and thread so I'd like to know who you are so I can thank you all personally.

Kath had two blocks, Debbie W, Adva P, Mary W, Sandi C, Carolyn H, Vici W, Skye, Laura (bridesmom) Melanie O, Judy R, Donna M, Carol P. and last but not least Christy who so lovingly put all this together. Thank you all but there are 5 blocks that are not signed because this is 14 people and one extra that Kath made makes 15 blocks. There are 20 block on the quilt. Also, Alison quited it and Bren made the handmade tag that she crossed stitched and something I'd love to do but can't see good enough to even try. Thank you all.

And HeyJudee put on her block, Rise above the storm, and you will find the sunshine. Well Judy, I found my sunshine when I joined SWN. You are all the best.

Peggy I wasn't in hiding LOL either I was running around like a mad women going here and going there or when I did get on the puter I would go where the rest of our community was on the St Bernard Forum. I really didn't know anyone on there from before but I felt like I was home in some sort of weird way. All the people on there was from my community before the storm. It was like being home via proxy. Some of the people on there were hiding behind screen names because they were saying things about the local gov and they didn't want anyone to know who they were. Other's didn't care if you knew who they were. Of course some were nasty saying things bad and being rude but most of the time it felt like I was home. My real place is here with all of you. When I get on the computer I don't know when to get off and go do my work. ROFL. I even didn't have time to sew  when I was on it sometimes. But it's good to be back.

Ladies, you ALL did a very beautiful job on the quilt!!!!! Susie, you deserve to have something as wonderful as what they did for you. I wish that I had know about it too!!!
I know that even if someone didn't get to do a block for the quilt you where still on the minds of everyone here. Not a day went by that this place was not buzzing with concern about you and your family's safety. As soon as someone heard anything from you, they where on here filling everyone in.
Susie, you have made it very easy to LOVE YOU. We have watched and talked with you during this whole ordeal and you just seem to get stronger and stronger everyday. Some might have just given up but you didn't. You just took the bull by the horns a plowed straight ahead. You are a AMAZING WOMAN and we love you for it.:bg: :bg: :bg:

Hi Susie,
I made one of the blocks too - the one I called the prayer block - but I didn't know we were suppose to sign it so I didn't. I did put a letter with it when I sent it to Texas which explained the block because it was my own design. Hope you got the letter. So glad you like the quilt. The ladies did a great job putting it together.
Take care

Violet and Dede, Christy aka Texas Angel is sending me the letters that came with the blocks she forgot to put them in the package when it went on to Maine. Please explain the colors in your blocks because I'm new to quilting and don't know the names of all the blocks. Each and everyone of the blocks are cherished and unique to me because not only did they come from all over the world but I know how much love went into them. I truly feel blessed to have such great friends that would do this for me. I took my quilt to my Weight Watchers meeting today and showed my friend who quilts with me and she WOW'ed and WOO'ed it. I feel the angels on here at work believe me when I say that I really do.

When we evacuated and I couldn't get on the computer with my friends I felt alone and anxious. One of my sons friends took their laptop computer with them to the motel where we were staying and she had an AOL account and I was able to tell you all we were safe almost the next day after the storm but couldn't stay on for long because the computer was slow but I knew you all would be worried about me. Then as soon as we rented the place we were going to stay in for a while I went straight to the cable company, the same cable company I had in Chalmette thank God and was hooked up with you all in less than a week. Then I disappeared again because I left my computer and went to Baton Rouge so I could be closer my husband and to Kentwood and I could work on our property. Then in November we moved here for good and I went to Bastrop and gathered up my few things I had (my machines, my computer and clothes, and Raymond's old car) and I was back in business. Now it seems I never get to play on the computer and set still enough to chat anymore. My Butt stays in the truck running here and there because everything is so far away. But even when I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, I know you all are there cheering me on and I feel so much better just knowing that you all are there. I'm a fighter and a strong believer in God and I know there is a reason for everything, and sometimes I don't want to go through what he wants me to but it's the only way so I get on with it with a smile. Naomi, I'm not amazing I'm like a sheep I go where I'm told and take what's given to me and move on. What else is there to do? If you know let me know please....ggggggggggggggg Sometimes I'd like to skip it. LOL
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Susie,
I knew about the quilt, but I did not feel adequate to make a block, because I am such a beginner.. I sent prayers ever since I first heard about it.. I feel like I made the right decision, it is so BEAUTIFUL, and I could not have made a block that would be near as good looking as all of those are.. I am so glad to see it.. I know you were glad to get such a great package in the mail.. I sat here and the tears just rained down at the beauty and love that I see when I look at that quilt.. This is absolutely the best site on The whole WWW.. Where else could you find so much love among a bunch of women of all ages, and backgrounds, and countries??? Mary , thanks again for this site.. Susie and Raymond , sleep warm! !

Thanks Libby you are so right about this site. Mary needs a quilt now for making us all feel so good. LOL I think if we made Mary one it would stretch half way around the world with all the blocks they'd have in that succor. Seriously, I keep looking at it myself over and over again and keep thinking, IT"S MINEEE I can't believe it's mine. Libby I'm sure as long as you've been sewing that anything you would sew including a quilt block would be wonderful. Hugs for the prayers.

Adva, yes you did make a block and you signed yours so I knew you sent it. And it's a pretty one too. They told me the idea for this was started last year so I guess you could forget if you made a block for it. LOL Thank you so much.

But I'm still not sure who the others are from please if you made a block for my quilt please let me know so I can thank you too.

Suzie, there isn't much to explain about the block I contributed (the tulip). These are fabrics I had left from other projects. A big hurray for leftovers

Hi Susie,
My block is on the top row, third block in (between the red and black one and the orange and brown one).
It is my own design and my letter should explain it's meaning to you.

Glad you are getting settled but I'm so sorry for what you, and al the others, had to go thru.

Take care
Violet
