Hi everyone, this is my first posting on this forum

Somewhere, I heard that you can embroider lace effect designs and embroidered written words (in joined writing) etc without having to embroider directly onto the fabric. I believe someone said just use several layers of Solvy and embroider directly onto it. I'd like to be able to embroider names etc that can be sewn onto articles. (I hope this is making sense). Has anyone ever tried this or know of the correct way to do it? Many thanks in advance.

I do a lot of free-standing lace. I would think it would be the same concept as writing words. The only thing is, I would think each letter would have to attach to another letter. For directions on free-standing lace on Solvy (without fabric) go to:

http://www.emblibrary.com/el/elprojects/default.aspx

There is a video clip and written instructions as well.

Good luck!

Many thanks for that. Have watched the video which is very informative. Looks like lace designs have to be specially digitised to be 'free standing'. Not sure if that means that it would need to be 'joined up' writing for words or if they too would need to be specially digitised. I guess the only way to find out is to try it.

Thanks again

Hi Sara, I don't own an embroidery machine yet but am hoping to very soon. I did want to welcome you to the boards though. You'll find lots of info and help here. Show us some of your embroidery when you can. We love to look!

Free standing lace is specially digitized. You have to first lay a framework for the stitches to be attached to..and then each of the stitches have to interlink with the framework and each other or it will fall apart. Only letters, and lace that are specially digitized can be used. You cannot just type a word on your machine and stitch it out and expect it to hold together.

I have been able to overlap FSL edges and join them on the larger hoops so that they will stay together so I can tell you that you can merge FSL letters into a design through software or your machine (if it will allow you to do so) and make words.

I know that some people use Villene which is a good water based stabilzer. I do not know if they use more than one layer. If I were to use Aquamesh I would probably use two layers...both of these are white in appearance. Polymesh looks like perforated paper. I haven't seen Villene. I use Badgemaster which is a very strong water soluable stabilzer. It looks like stiff plastic and works great. I've never had it break through on me. When you go to wash the stabilizer out, you trim the excess and then dissolve only enough to remove the excess. If you soak the lace it becomes floppy. If you remove only a small amount it will have body and be stiff. This is what they do to make FSL bowls. It would also be what I would do if I were going to use it as patches or appliques. However, once the garment is washed, the applique will go limp as the stabilzer dissolves away.

Only designs which are advertised as Free Standing Lace can be relied upon to hold up to having the stabilizer removed....if you go hunting you'll find a lot of it. Also, remember that you have to respect copywrites so if this is going to be sold you need to keep it in mind.

Solvy isn't heavy enough to support FSL unless you use 6-8 layers of it. I much prefer Vilene which is more like a fabric instead of a film for FSL. YOu only need one layer and it won't rip like the films will. The prior poster is right, this won't work unless the design is specifically digitized to be used this way, otherwise when you rinse it out all you will end up with is a pile of thread!

Solvy has an extra heavy out & so far I have had no problems with it for FSL. Maybe I have just been lucky so far. Has anyone has a problem with it for FSL ? I haven't used the veliene but it sounds good as well as the one Nancy Z sells. Also, I make a thick starch for mine instead of leaving some of the solvy in.For an angel or such I starch it & stuff it with plastic wrap, let it dry & there you are.You can shape it very nicely with the wrap. Maybe someone else has an even better way of doing it.

I use a product called Aqua Mesh by OESD. I did some free standing lace butterflies, using a layer of the Aqua Mesh and a layer of tulle. The Aqua Mesh washes away when you dip it in water and you're left with the design on the tulle. Then I cut out the design and apply it to the project. That's what works for me. Hope this helps.
Good luck with your designs!

I have made lace in a free motion embroidery class. I do not have an embroidery machine so do not understand what digitalization means. I have misplaced my notes but it seems to me we used either iron off or wash off stabilizer and it used a lot of thread. One could make lace and then write / print or whatever name in another colour over and through the lace which would make the name stand out.

I've used the Ulta Solvy. It will still rip once in awhile especially if you are holding a thread tail and the machine decides to start with a jump stitch like some designs do. I only use films now for toppers because the stuff that is fabric like is so much nicer to work with. There are several brands, Vilene is only one of them.

I guess mine never ripped as I stop the machine to cut the jump stitches.I'll have to try some of the others & see what ones I like the best. Around here Solvy is easy to find but the others have to be ordered. I've heard good things about several.

I have used both OSED aqua mesh and the ultra solvy. I am new to embroidery but have not had a problem.

Aqua Mesh and Vilene are the same thing.. just distributed by different companies.. its also distributed under a few other names as well... like Chris, I now use solvy only as a topper and use Vilene/Aqua Mesh/Aqua Magic when I need a WSS on the bottom, as in FSL...

just my 2 cents...
