Hi all! I'm not sure if this is the right place for it, but I need to know if you can downsize a pattern. I'm making matching pirate costumes for my 2 boys for Halloween. Trouble is, I found the pattern I want to use, but the smallest size I could find in anything was a 2-4. How can I downsize it to fit my munchkin? Thank for your help! Katie

Hi Katie, what size is your little one?? If you are going down to 1 yr or 18 months that shouldn't be too hard, check out general sewing for a thread on upsizing, the principles are the same,
Sometimes with the kids I will trace a t-shirt and pants that have the fit I want and compare my tracing to the paper pattern and adjust from there.

I'm trying to take it down to a 12-18 month size. I'll check out that info. Thanks!

I have an instruction booklet in front of me and this is what they are stating that needs to be done......and would suggest using this as you are downsizing by a few.

ADJUSTING WIDTH

TOP:
If you need to change the width of the shirt, determine the amount of adjustment needed and divide by 4. Draw a line on the front and the back from the shoulder to the bottom edge. This line should be parallel to the grain line. Cut the pattern apart on this line (I would trace a working pattern pc). Spread the pattern apart to make it larger or overlap to make it smaller. Be sure to make the same adjustments on the front and back pcs. Redraw the shoulder. This adjustment will change the finished length of the shoulder and sleeve. Be sure to check the sleeve length & adjst if needed.

PANTS:
If you need to change the width of the pants, determine the amount of ajustment needed and divide by 4. ON the front and back, draw a line perpendicular to the grain line 3" below the crothc. Draw a line parelle to the grain line from the waist to this line. Cut the pattern apart on the line. Spread the pattern apart to make it larger & overlap to make it smaller. Be sure to make the same adjustments on the bront & back pattern pcs. Draw a smooth connecting lines on the outside & inside leg seams.

If you need diagrams as to see what I described, you can email me privately at <email address removed for privacy> with downsizing pattern in subject line so that I will know not to delete it.

I always trace my patterns on tissue paper and save the originals whenever I can, especially when alterations are concerned. Also, for the lengthen or shorten, those usually have a line for the adjustment on the pattern.

Hope this helps.
