What do you WANT it to do for you? Just to finish edges of projects or more? How much are you willing to spend for it?
Make sure that you look at ones at a reputable Sewing Machine Dealer. Many times you can buy quality machines that have been traded in by someone who has upgraded their Serger for fractions of the price of brand new ones. You want one with the insides made METAL PARTS. Stay away from the lower end ones at Wal Mart, Sears, they WILL NOT hold up and you will get frustrated quickly.
Plus with going to a Sewing Machine Dealer you will be able to sit down and try out the various sergers they have to see what you like and dislike about it. They will be able to answer your questions and just might give you classes ( usually do this with new machines only).

Well I really thought of it to finish edges, but would the price be much higher in comparison.Money wise is $300. unrealistic? I don't really know.

Liz, you are going to get such a variety of answers. I love my HUskylock 910 but it's more than $300 but does what I want and problems I've had were/are operator error. Go out and try some at a dealers, walk away and think about them then decide. But do go to a dealer, they are invaluable for help, classes, etc. Just my 2cents worth.

You'd be surprised what you can get at a Dealer for that amount of money AND it will be a reliable machine. Like I said before look at the trade-ins that they have.
Make a list of all the things that you want it to do for you. Take that with you and let them show you what they have. Don't think that you have to make a purchase right then and there. Ask them to put things into writing for you. This way you will have something to refer to when reviewing your list and when shopping at another dealer. These businesses are very competitive with each other and will just about bend over backwards to get your sale.
If you still need more input, that's what we are here for!!!!!!!

In one of the other threads they had mentioned going to www.patternreview.com and look at the mahince reviews from other people. Check it out and see if anyone has the Brother Serger you have looked at and what the review is about it.

For $300 you might get a good reconditioned or exchanged serger. Check with your local dealer. For a good new one you are probably loking at $500 on up.
Checking places like "pattern review" can be very helpfull but scrutinize what you are reading. Don't rely on reports where the person has only had the machine a few months. Make sure they have had it long enough to break it in and get over the "I love my new machine" period. Also,as much as I hate to say it there are some unscrupulous dealers that will post reports as if they were satisfied (or unsatisfied) customers.
The best bet is to find a dealer you feel confident in.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom
