Anyone growing their own spinach? Hubby and I are really missing our spinach salads since it was pulled from all the grocery stores after the recent E.coli scare. We got in a habit of eating it 3 or 4 times a week.
Hubby is going to plant some in our fall garden this weekend. I just checked with the county extension office and we can plant it here up til Oct 1st.

Not spinach, but I grow my own swiss chard. For me that is close enough to spinach. I grew spinach a couple of years ago and after a few weeks it went to seed. Our growing season is short enough in :Canada: that I found it was a waste of garden space.

I like swiss chard because it doesn't go to seed. I can pick and eat it up right up until the frost hits. Also, swiss chard has a two year growing season here. I just cut off all the leaves at the ground and next spring it will begin growing again.

I don't think I've ever eaten Swiss chard. Do you have to cook it or can you eat it in salads like spinach? Hubby and I both love raw spinach but only eat it cooked in veggie lasagna or spinach and cheese stuffed pasta shells.

I don't know if it would work in salads. I've never tried it as I usually cook it. I love cooked spinach or chard. Swiss chard has a thicker texture to the leaf, esp. the stalk. If I haven't picked my chard for a bit, it gets quite large and I just cut off the stalks before cooking. I think I will give it a try.

Creamed spinach is yummy. Cook as usual, add some butter, cream and a pinch of nutmeg!

Guess what? NO SPINACH SEEDS TO BE FOUND! Hubby tried several places and they all said they sold out as soon as they got them in. I guess alot of other people had the same idea. :bluesad:
He did plant me some broccoli plants tho. And turnip greens (yuck) for his mother.

There was fresh spinach in the store when I went earlier this week with a big sign "Spinach is Back."

Hey Bama...I'll look in the stores and may be able to find some on sale...since the growing is over. If I find some I can send them to you.

Thank you Judy, but I'm not sure how much longer we can plant it here. The county extension office said by Oct. 1st.
Hubby's broccoli is looking good. I didn't notice until yesterday that he also planted mustard greens, something called rape? and kale. I don't even know what to do with the rape or kale. :nc:
He doesn't eat most of it either. He just likes to watch it grow and gives it away. :dave: His 84yo aunt was here yesterday and was thrilled with his garden.

We still don't have fresh spinach in the stores here.
