Hi everyone, I need your help again.

I need suggestions for new forums. New main topics.

I am thinking Wardrobe Choices or maybe Notions. Please post what you think our boards are lacking. Sewing related please.

I think the Wardrobe Choices would be good. Any help for those of us that have to work where we have a dress code and how to put together the most for our money would be great.
Something that would help me is some instruction on how to pick fabric colors and how to put them together. I'm still really new to sewing and I go into the fabric store to pick fabric for a small quilt and I'm so overwhelmed by the choices that I still haven't bought fabric to start a quilt.

I tend to think of notions as "have you seen this dohickey? It is just great for..."
How about Hints and tips -
sneaky ways you find of doing things that just make it that little bit easier. Though I have to admit that could be more a series of articles...
e.g. interfacing how to.
how to make a facing lay flat!
different zip treatments.
hemming 101
just how do you quilt with those lovely patterns???

Yes,
Notions and Hints and Tips are great ideas. Also a How to section or lesson. I am new to sewing and have not graduated to garment sewing just yet so I think it would be great to have a How to thread for putting in zippers, elastic etc. That could be added along with hints and tips as well.

A forum for Fabrics would be good...I know there are a bunch of places where there are short (or long) writeups on general ways of dealing with specific fabrics, but then maybe there could also be a place where people can offer their advice and share experiences.

What about hand sewing. I know a lot of people who are crocheting and knitting, Jan you are one of those people, :nah: Or we could have a section for Fabric Manipulation. Sort of like yoyo, pin tucks, shirring, ect ect ect. Then there is magazines we like and articles in the mags we like. Or patterns we like or websites for buying fabric, patterns ect ect ect. I know a lot of people who shared websites for different things I needed and was grateful they sent them to me. Example, Quilters News Network http://www.qnntv.com/.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

What about a forum to post pictures of your latest project that you want to share. If we had a central place for pictures it might help get the jucies flowing, plus it might help with your band width to be more manageable for you.

There are plenty of knitting sites out there, Susie and Mary asked to keep this sewing. I think she wants to keep the site focussed and I can respect that - after all she lets me rant about my creations sometimes! Most of my knitting is garment making after all.

Like many people here I have fairly eclectic tastes, but if you look at the traffic on the forums it is definitely sewing and quilting ones that get the most hits - as it should be for a site like this.

The pictures idea is interesting - and if we link to offsite it shouldn't suck the bandwidth should it?

I found the people in bridal sewing really helpful when I needed that input - howabout evening/prom /special occasion wear?

Why do you think you need more forums, Mary? I actually quite like the ones that we have and they do separate things quite naturally. But if you do want more I think an Introduction forum may be good. People seem to introduce themselves in different forums. It would be nice to go to one place to 'place' someone. It is time consuming to go to the profile section and personal introduction seem to make the person more real. You would have to decide about people posting their selling web sites at the time. I do appreciate your latest memo on that. A sticky in an Introduction forum would be a good place to post some posting tips - like use of fonts hard to read, etc.
I also agree that a place just for pictures would be helpful, but I find that I go to look at pictures based on someone's message.
As far as tips go, they are spead out in the sections one is looking at. We do have the learning articles on the main Sew News site but some may not be comfortable posting there and a learning/lessons/tips forum may be good. Unfortunately, on other forums I visit there tends to be a lot of duplication of tips. There is a good teaching / leaning forum on purses somewhere on the web. A free pattern listings/ good sites forum may be welcomed. But, as I said, I like it the way it is.

I definitely agree that an Introductions section would help with the mechanics--It seems to be an online convention for folks to start there and get to know the climate before posting in other places. It also makes a nice welcome mat.

Someone also mentioned above about fabrics--Perhaps one section about Supplies, which would cover notions, fabrics, Q's about which thread to choose, must-have tools, in-search-of-froggy-print-flannels, etc. I remember when I first encountered this site, I stumbled on a thread that was all about working with a particular fabric type. I thought it was fabulous and learned so much. It wasn't in response to a question, but everyone contributing their own experiences about this fabric. This thread was what hooked me to the site, and I had the sense that there might be more discussions of this type periodically. I'd love more of the same, and I think a Materials/Supplies section would be the place to go for it.

Well Mary, do you think you opened a can of worms ?LOL. Now I suggest you get a MUCH larger site as all are good suggestions. This reminds me of asking my children what they wanted for dinner. All wanted something different.:re: Just kidding as all are good ideas. Some we already have but maybe can expand on those some. Reading the post so far just struck me funny. I'm tired this evening & for some reason when I'm tired things strike me as funny. Guess that's better than being a grump.

Wow, Andrea - you are on a roll - I like your suggestions. I think a supplies/material forum would produce a lot of discussion. I also agree with renaming the bridal to formal (special) wear and perhaps including couture tips (yikes - spelling fog hits again). I wonder, as well if the middle age spread would draw more people if called health and wellness or some such thing.

I visit a number of other sites (actually wasting time and not sewing) but this one I come to every day and every day I learn something and rarely do I get irritated, which I do on some others. So Hip hip hooray for you, Mary.

I really like the idea of one about specific fabrics.
And maybe one to show off.

Maybe you could consider a thread where everyone can pray for each other.
When I first started here there was a forum rule that you wouldn't have those praying threads. That was one of the things I liked about it.
Well, that rule has fallen along the wayside. That's fine since I'm sure I'm in the minority when I'm annoyed by it. But if you had your little Christian corner it would be easier for everyone and I wouldn't feel tempted to post this --

Mary - are there any that you want to get rid of? Seems to me Home and Hearth and Middle age spread overlap a fair bit.
